How many major museums are there in the world? By major I mean museums
such as the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, or the
Smithsonian.

I forsee difficulties in determining the cut-off point between major
and not-major. I know it is hard, but a researcher will need some way
of judging what qualifies and what doesn't.
