Question ID: 232620
We are having major pain with our machine.
It has a Pentium 650mhz, 128mb ram, 20GB harddisk with Windows 98SE
First, I have loaded it with WordPerfect 9, dBaseIV, IE 6.0 and
Netscape 7.0.
At this stage the system works fine.
Finally, I installed Norton Anti-Virus 2003.

We can use WordPerfect, dBaseIV and the Internet with no problem.
Even with Norton, the system works fine before getting on the
Internet.

After using the Internet, however, and when continuing to use
applications like WordPerfect on the computer, the system becomes
sluggish and sometimes freezes. Also, the computer does not hold the
dialup connection to the Internet and disconnects.

I would get rid of Norton, but we would risk getting viruses from the
Internet.

I have watched the % system performance values, and have tried to keep
it at 90%, but Norton wants to add its program to the background
process at startup time.

I have used the msconfig on the startup tab to cut down the number of
background programs.

I have checked for boot sector virus.
I have been rebuilt the computer slowly
The system is not loaded with lots of programs. Basically, there are
only seven programs loaded on the system and basic Window 98SE.

The suggestion of moving to Window XP would not work and does not
solve the central problem. This is because the Norton Anti-virus said
it would work with platform: Window XP Home/XP PRO/2000 Pro/Me/98

The Good solution and reason for this issue

Hi bc90007!!

I need to know the list of the programs that appear in the msconfig
--> startup list.
Also press ctrl+alt+del in order to run the task manager and provide
us with the list of programs running.
If you do this we will be in a better position to help you.

regards.

Please try the following, and let me know how this works:

Start with the Swap File, which is located under the
'System' icon in the control panel. You can also access
this by right-clicking on 'My Computer -> 'Properties'.

- Click on the 'Performance' tab.
- Click on the 'Virtual Memory' button under 'Performance'.
- Click on the 'Let me specify my own virtual memory settings'
  bullet.
- Leave the Hard Disk setting alone.
(Though you will have better performance if you put the swap file
on a different hard drive/partition than the one Windows is on).
- Set both the "Minimum" and "Maximum" settings to 256MB.
- Click the "OK" button.

After you click "OK" Windows is going to tell you that setting
your own Virtual Memory setting is risky - just click "YES".

Now, click on the "File System" button

- Pull the "Typical role of this computer" drop box down and
choose 'Network Server' (this will make better use of RAM).
- Click 'OK'

Now click 'OK' on the main window and restart your computer.

This may give you the edge you need. It certainly can't hurt.
Let me know your outcome.

Hi Bc90007,

I have NAV 2003 installed on my Win98SE system and I don't have any
problem with it. It's true that it uses some of your system resources
for its virus autoprotect feature and it would help if you increase
your virtual memory settings as the Sublime one has suggested. You can
also add another 128RAM for good measure.

Another thing you can do is to run msconfig and uncheck the entry
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccRegVfy.exe" Whether
you registered or not, unchecking this entry will not cause problem to
NAV and you can still update the software. I've also unchecked that on
my system and I have no problem about it. Please remember to restart
after doing so.

f this solves your problem, please let me know. Thank you.

Feilong

You said "I changed the virtual memory to only 17633 and reboot,
I got a message 'insufficient memory to initialize window' dump
me in safe mode..."

I don't remember the exact interface in Windows 98, but 17633
looks to me like 17MB, which is, of course, too little. I'm
suggesting that you set both your minimum and maximum to twice
the size of your RAM, or 256MB. On my current system, Windows
2000, I would just set the numbers to 256/256, since the
interface calls for the number of MBs, but it looks like your
interface is calling for kilobytes, so you would need to set
it for 256000/256000. Try that and see how it works.

Bc90007,

In case you still want to continue to use NAV, please do the
following:

In msconfig - startup

ScanRegistry - check
SystemTray - check
LoadPowerProfile - check
ccApp - check
ccRegVfy - UNCHECK
SchedulingAgent	- UNCHECK
ccEvtMgr - check
ScriptBlocking - check

After unchecking the two entries in your msconfig, go to NAV
configuration options and uncheck "Enable automatic LiveUpdate" and
click OK.

Regarding your virtual memory, the reason why you got the message
"insufficient memory to initialize window" is because you have set it
too high. You said you only have a 20GB HD. Your setting of 17,633
means 17GB of virtual memory, and that's too much. Change it to:

Minimum: 500
Maximum: 1000

Please confirm that you followed the above instructions and tell me
what happened.

Regards,
Feilong

I personally shy away from NAV, I've found it to cause more problems
than it solves. On win98 however, you are going to need some sort of
antivirus protection. Well, every computer should have it, but I've
noticed a lot of the mass e-mail worms/viruses tend to be especially
effective against win95/98 systems compared to newer OS's. So
definitely have some antivirus.

If you want to see if norton is causing the problem, just disable it
for a while and see if it goes away. If the problem goes away while
norton is disabled, just use a more efficient antivirus program. I use
bitdefender (www.bitdefender.com) and I've heard good things about AVG
(not sure the url).

Good Day bc90007,

I have to second funkywizard on his comment. I have just had a client
experience a lot of problems with Norton. Even when disabled! We had
to uninstall it, get rid of it all together.

My client's problems were different than what you are experiencing,
but it sounds like NAV is causing quite a few problems for some users.

I have never used bitdefender, but do use AVG myself (infact, I
installed it on the client's computer too, after getting rid of NAV on
his Win98 machine). AVG is free for basic usage, and can be acquired
at http://www.grisoft.com. I have been using it for over a year now,
and since installed it on a lot of computers. Not a single problem so
far.

Researcher slawek-ga.

Why not use different virus software - personally I would recomend AVG
it is not so memory hogging as norton.

I have tried Norton products some time ago. I will never use them
again. As said above they cause many problems. @ the moment I'm using
F-Secure Anti-Virus and F-Secure Firewall. The anti virus software
receivs free updates without timelimit in the background. I really
recommend this product.
