I have Linksys wireless network to which I connect via the WiFi
connection on my laptop. In installing a home X-10 system, I have
found that I am asked to connect the PC via a hard-wire serial port
connection to an X-10 transceiver that will control the X-10 network.

How can I connect the laptop to the X-10 transceiver wirelessly? The
Linksys router -- the BEFW11S4 V2 LInkssys Ethernet Wireless Access
Point -- has a four-port switch (info can be found at
http://linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=415)

The simplest way to control the X-10 tranceiver over wireless network is
to run vncserver on the desktop connected to the X-10 transceiver and then
run a vncclient on the laptop connected to the network wirelessly. You could
get tightvnc for free from: http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html
Another way is to connect to the desktop through a telnet connection and
access the serial port directly through command line programs on the desktop.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks, ldavinci! Only problem is that I have no desktop; the laptop
connects wirelessly to the router, which in turn connects to the
Internet. Gotta find the solution for this.. ;-)

Lantronix makes a "Device server" that is a rs-232 port accessible
over ethernet. Here is a link to their description:
http://www.lantronix.com/products/ds/uds10/index.html

The serial port of this device should be connected to the X-10 serial
controller and the ethernet port should be connected to the a port in
the Linksys switch.

Then install the Lantronix freeware, "DeviceComm Manager", which adds
a com port to your PC (laptop), and then redirects the I/O to the
designated "Device Server". Here is the link:
http://www.lantronix.com/support/utils/devicecomm/index.html

I have never tried this, so I do not know if it will work, but it
looks good on paper. Lantronix also makes 2 port, 8 port, 16 port
device servers. I have seen these "Device Servers" on ebay at
reasonable prices.

(I hope that this problem is not too old for a solution.)
