I would like to know the approximate value of the marble sculpture
"Psyche and Cupid" sculpted by Salvatore Albano and shown on the
website of the ARC (Art Renewal Center). I have a friend who owns a
sculpture which appears to be almost identical to the one shown.

In 2002 an Albano bust was listed for auction with an expected price
of between 5000-7000 USD. One could extrapolate from that to an
estimated value for the piece in the illustration, but it would be
only a very rough estimate at best.

Of course, even that would not give any reliable idea of the possible
value of the piece owned by your friend, which could be Albano's work,
a copy, a cast, or merely similar in style and subject but by another
artist.

Do you want the information for the bust?

Thank you hlabadie. My friend's sculpture is signed by "Prof. S.
Albano", it is made of white (probably Carrara) marble, and has the
same dimensions as the Psyche and Cupid depicted on the ARC website.
The only difference appears to be that that there is a thin
transparent "draping" or "veil" of marble "clothing" over Psyche's
lower stomache in my friend's sculpture, although it still doesn't
leave much to the imagination. It is not a bust and I agree with you
that it would not be very helpful to try to extrapolate from the price
of the bust to the price of the much larger and more complex
sculpture.

I hope that someone can find out what price was paid originally for
the Psyche and Cupid or some other major work by Salvatore Albano as a
way of determining the present value of my friend's sculpture.

The Maine Antique Digest Of Aug.1998, Page 9B Published a photo of a
semi-nude, similar in size to the Psyche/Cupid in question. Was priced
at $200,000.
Paper says the item was sold but does not mention the final price. I
own an Albano life sized bust. Interstingly it appears that his
statues, that I've seen all seem to be of the same model with the
same head position. I sure like mine.
