I know there is a registry setting that tells Microsoft Excel not to
open the default workbook, Book1, when you open Excel or another
workbook. By default Excel will open "Book1" and whichever workbook
you have chosen to open.

I want the registry setting to turn this off.

Hi dpcarlton-ga,

The best way to configure your Excel installation to open without the
default blank workbook is to use a startup switch. You can do this
with the following steps:

1. Right-click on your Excel program icon (this is a shortcut that is
typically located in Start > Programs).

2. Select Properties

3. In the dialog box that pops up, in the 'Target' field you should
see something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE"

4. Leave everything in the double quotes as-is, but add a space and /e
to the end of it like this:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" /e

5. Select Apply, then OK

6. Select the Excel shortcut you just modified...it should open
without the embedded Book1.xls.

Hope that helps, but please post a clarification if necessary :)

Cheers!

That only works if you start Excel by itself, ie double click on the
icon. It will still open "Book 1" if yuo open another workbook, which
is by far the biggest anoyance.

I am looking for a way, and I know it exists becuase I have done it
before, is to change the regsitry setting so that Book 1 never
appears.

Hi again,

What version of Excel are you using? Your version of Windows would also be helpful.

I've searched high and low for any mention of registry settings that
could be used to resolve this problem. You mentioned that this problem
was fixed through the registry before - were you using the same
versions of windows and excel at that time?

As a workaround, I would suggest running the Eraser2k utility which
will sever all registry elements associated with Office 2000 products.
Then just reinstall from the CD and you registry will be reset to
normal. It's worth noting that simply uninstalling and reinstalling
would not clean out the registry like this:

Let me know how it goes...
