I would like to find out about how many different types of
contemporary art fairs there are in London, why they are becoming more
popular, what is their role? What are the comparable ones abroad ? Is
London more a centre these days for contemporary art fairs (not
galleries etc - this is focused on the fairs only). Where does the
Fresh Art fair in London (just gone) fit into all of this - what is
its focus?

<The are a number of different types of art fair selling contemporary
art in London:
Contemporary fairs - The London Art Fair, Art London and Frieze Art
Fair
Mixtures of art and antiques - The Spring Olympia Fine Arts &
Antiques fair. BADA Antiques & Fine Art Fair.
Works on Paper – Art on Paper Fair.
Low priced works – The Affordable Art Fair.
Emerging artists – The Fresh Art Fair.

From a dealer’s perspective art fairs allow works to put in front of a
wider audience than can be achieved at a gallery show.

An article, The Rise and Rise of Art Fairs by Brook S. Mason points to
the increasing number of collectors as one of the main reasons for the
popularity of art fairs. According to David Kusin global spending on
art fairs last year was $1 billion. The fairs offer collectors the
chance to see a huge quantity of work that is impossible to show in an
individual gallery. It is a more efficient way to buy art. The fairs
also allow dealers to compete with auction houses.

New York is the major centre for art fairs with around 20 major
events. Compared to Europe London offers a wider choice of speciality
fairs.

More recently the trend has been to provide speciality art fairs and
there has been particular success of fairs offering cheaper art like
the Affordable Art Fairs. The Fresh Art Fair is one of the new breed
of speciality fair. It is aimed at providing work by emerging artists.
There is a selection process to ensure the quality of work is good.
Works are also low priced compared to other fairs with much of the
work costing as little as £500. Around 30 universities and colleges
take part which allows the final year students to make industry
contacts.

Thank you this is helpful. Could you possibly give me details of the
article you mention so that I may access this. Do you know of any
other articles or books on this subject? Also, could you give me any
references to the major European contemporary art fairs ? Thanks.

The following link should take you to the article.
http://216.239.51.104/search?q=cache:g9HOmTiXAkQJ:www.artandantiquesfairguide.com/docs/article1.pdf+rise+%22art+fairs%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

It is also available in pdf format at
http://www.artandantiquesfairguide.com/docs/article1.pdf

The link to http://www.karaart.com/art.fairs/ will take you to the
major European art fairs. From the home page if you click on each
country, the major fairs are then listed with links to the home page
for each fair. For example clicking on Belgium will give brief details
of four fairs. Clicking on Art Brussels takes you to the home page of
the company that organises the fair.

Many thanks. This is helpful.
One last question; do you know of any books written on this area ? Do
you also know how to find more critical assessments of the role of the
contemp. art fair particularly about fresh art. Have there been any
reviews of the show for example?
Thanks.

Thank you. This is a great start to my own research around this area
as I am starting to write my own article about the phenomenon or art
fairs. I am amazed there seem to be no books on the subject. Thank you
so much for your help.
