In the WorldCat library catalog I was looking in the author of the
Michaelmas Girls is John James Barry not John Brooks Barry. Just a
note to help other researchers.

The author's name is John Brooks Barry. The library catalog mentioned
above is completely wrong. I know because 1) I worked as an editor on
this novel and 2)
John was a friend of mine.
Thanks.

Confusingly, the Library of Congress catalog records him both as John
Brooks Barry and as John James Barry!! If these are indeed the same
individual, then the catalog includes an entry under his name for a
book called "Bride of Abydos", published in 1967. The birth year is
given as 1933.

Tehuti-Ga, John Brooks Barry did indeed write The Bride of Abydos. As
far as I know this title and The Michaelmas Girls are his only works.
If there is only a record of his birth year, we can assume he is still
alive?
Thanks for reminding me of Bride of Abydos

Hello campbie,

I think we can only assume that the Library of Congress assumes he's
still alive!

I looked at the British Library Catalogue as well. There, John Brooks
Barry is cited as author of The Michaelmas Girls, and John James Barry
as author of The Bride of Abydos, so this confusion appears to be
universal. Neither name is linked with any other title, nor are the
two names linked with each other. No further details, dates etc are
provided about the author.

Tehuti thanks for finding both these names.
I knew this writer as John Brooks Barry, author of Bride of Abydos; at
that time
I was an editor with the London firm of Deutsch, and I commissioned
John to write a novel about Jack the Ripper. This was The Michaelmas
Girls. Then he went back to Colorado from London; and lately I've been
wondering if 1) is he still alive and 2) did he write more fiction?
The answer to the latter seems negative. I don't know about the
former.

There are a few John James Barry's living in Colorado:

I wonder if any of these are your man.

I'm sorry, these are just John Barry's that live in Colorado, not just
John James Barry. So this includes, possibly, any John Brooks
Barry's.

Bowler-ga, thanks for the names.
It's hard to know if any of these would be John Brooks Barry.
He might be listed John B Barry
or John Barry
or by this time he may be 1)dead or 2) unlisted 0r 3) gone from Colorado...
