Question ID: 233889
I have a hotel which is part of a franchise. There are branding
guidelines for individual websites. They must match the corporate
website. Rather than pay a webdesigner to reinvent the wheel, how do I
copy the corporate website? I have FrontPage and would like to use
this. I tried using "source" and copy/paste but the images, etc didn't
show up.

Are you willing to do the work with something other than FrontPage?
There are some other programs that allow you to import an entire site,
make changes and then put it somewhere else.

Good Day jmanly,

Sounds like you could make good use of a program called Site Snagger.
SITE: WebMasterFREE Categories
URL: http://www.webmasterfree.com/software/1193.html

Please remember what directory you install the program into. You will
need to know it later.

Once you install the program and run it, you will see a program
interface. Follow these few steps, and you will be on your way to
editing a copy of the franchise web site:

1. Select "New" in the "Project" menu, or via the quick menu.
2. Enter a description of the web site you will be downloading. This
is only for your reference. Do not worry about exact title as it
appears on the web site.
3. Select "Snag a Site" in the "Project" menu, or via the quick menu.
4. Enter the web address of the web site you want to download, click
Start.

You will see an array of file names appear in the dialogue box as they
download to your computer. When the download is complete, you will be
notified.

Now you have all the files on your computer. A side note: You might
have noticed the caption "Max Level: 2" in the dialogue where you
entered the web site address to snag. This means that the content of
any link appearing on the page you entered will also be downloaded.
You can change the Max Level to a higher or lower value:

- A value of 1 will only download the page at the address you specify
- A value of 2 will download the page at the address you specify, and
the full content of the specified page's links
- A value of 3 will download the page at the address you specify, the
full content of the specified page's links, and all content in the
links on the secondary pages.

etc. etc.

Please use this option with care, as it does not check if the links
are part of the same domain. If for example you use a level of 3, and
the page you specify has a direct link to yahoo, you will land up
downloading the hotel page, the yahoo page, and the million links that
the yahoo page has listed on their home page!

To change the depth level (Max Level) of the snag, in the "Project"
menu select "Options". Here you will be given the opportunity to
change the Max level of the snag, and the types of media it is to
download.

Now that you have the web site on your hard drive, start up Front
Page. Select Open Existing File from the menu, and go into the
directory where you installed Site Snagger. Inside the directory
where Site Snagger resides, you will see a "Projects" folder. Click
on the folder and you will see another folder with the name you
assigned to your project in Step #2 above. Access the folder, and
select the file you wish to edit. All the images will be referenced
correctly.

Please note that Site Snagger does encounter problems with a very
small and select number of web sites. If Site Snagger does not do the
job, please let me know and I will find another similar utility that
can better handle the web site you wish to snag. If there is a problem
and you are unsure if the problem is with the web site or maybe
something that you are doing wrong, please send me the address of the
page you want to download. I will try the download on my side to see
if it works.

If you are having problems with the program after you uncompress it,
please open and read the readme.txt file for installation
instructions.

Thank you for your question, and please be sure to ask for
clarification if you have trouble with any of the above described
steps.

I have used this program myself, after hearing about it at a local
computer user group. There was no search strategy used for this
information, other than accessing the many parts of my overworked
brain.

Good luck and have fun!

Regards,
slawek-ga

Excellent answer/program. I have already snagged the site and begun to
edit it. Google Answers comes through again

Try saving the page in Internet Explorer (or your favourite browser);
giving it a name like index.html (Remember to choose the option to
save everything.)

Then edit it in Frontpage as any other webpage. The images will be
saved in a folder called something like index-files; and can also be
edited to suit your needs.

Hi jmanly,

You can do this with Front Page.

From Help:

Import a web site, folder, or file
To import an external source into your web site, do the following:

Open the web site you want to import into.
On the File menu, click Import.
Choose the web site or files you want to import:
Import a file from your computer or network

Click Add File, and then browse to the folder where the file is
located.
Select the file, and then click Open. The file is added to the list in
the Import dialog box.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have selected all the files you want,
and then click OK.
Note If you import a Microsoft Access database (.mdb extension), you
will be asked to create a database connection and to store the file in
the Fpdb folder. You can protect the privacy of your database by
moving it into the Fpdb folder, because permissions for the Fpdb
folder specify that it can't be viewed in a Web browser.

Import a folder from your computer or network

Click Add folder, and then in the Browse for Folder dialog box, locate
the folder you want to use.
Select the folder, and then click OK.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have selected all the files you want,
and then click OK.
Import a web site from a web server

Click From Web, and then in the Location box, type the complete URL of
the starting page you want to import. The starting page can be any
page in the web, not just the home page.
To import a web site that uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for secure
transactions, select the Secure connection required (SSL) check box.
Click Next.
Choose one or more of the following:
Specify the number of subdirectories beneath the root

Select the Limit to this page plus check box, and then select a number
in the levels below box. By default, this check box is selected, and
the levels below box specifies 5.

Specify the import limit in kilobytes

In the Limit to box, type the total amount, in kilobytes, to limit the
import to. The default is 500 KB.

Specify whether you want only text and image files or other files as
well

To import only text and image files, select Limit to text and image
files.

Click Finish.
Note If you import a disk-based web site into an existing disk-based
web site, Microsoft FrontPage adds the files and folders only to the
current disk-based web site. It does not create a new disk-based
subweb.
