There is a really sweet animated TV commercial for the antidepressent Zoloft. All it basicallly consists of is a horizontal blob just slinking along with a frown and a dark cloud over Little Depressed Blob. After a little demonstration of molecules passing between cartoon brain cells, Little Depressed Blob becomes Little Happy Blob with a chirpy birdy flying overhead. I have no idea whether or not this commercial is efficacious for sales of Zoloft or not, but it's very sweet and entertaining. Does anyone know who the artist is who drew this commercial? Thanks, Yesmam |

Dear yesmam-ga; Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question. The artist you are inquiring about is 30 year-old international award-winning animator and director Patrick Smith of New York. His most recent Public Installation "Columns" is currently on display throughout downtown New York. At the present, Smith is working with Blend Films NYC, a foundation that promotes animation and related mediums as fine art. Patrick Smiths studio is in Tribeca, NYC. PAT SMITH PROFILE http://www.patsmith.com/patsmith_profile.html http://www.patsmith.com/images/delivery_director_01_big.jpg On Pat Smiths NEWS page, I found this blurb about his work on the Zoloft project: Pat Smith has recently directed a series of animated spots for the anti-depression drug, "Zoloft." The series of spots is being produced by Pitch Inc. in New York City, the agency is Deutsch. Expect two more to show up on air by this fall. http://www.patsmith.com/patsmith_news.html You can read much more about this young man on his web site and theres even an email address if youd like to contact him yourself and tell him how much you admire his little animated creature seen here http://www.patsmith.com/images/patsmith_cave.gif: PAT SMITH, ANIMATOR, DIRECTOR, ARTIST http://www.patsmith.com/index.html Here you will find a great deal of information about his upcoming animated movie Delivery: http://www.patsmith.com/blend_index.html I hope you find that that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any questions about my research please post a clarification request prior to rating the answer. I welcome your rating and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us. tutuzdad-That was great work. I am concerned though that my question is so silly that IT WILL RECEIVE A 5-STAR rating for, "You dummie, what do you do with your life besides think of edgie and irrelevent questions?" award! Thanks so much tutuzdad. (By the way, who is tutu, and are you really its dad?) Yesmam |

I couldn't find the artist's name, but it was very entertaining to read the different ways in which people describe the "lead character" in the commercial. Online, the little fella has been called a walking egg, a circle thing, a happy face, a bubble-man, a rock, a disembodied head (yikes!), and -- my favorites -- a "blooby" and "that little blob shlumping around." |

Wow! Great work by tutuzdad! I failed to find that info, so I am really depressed, and am going to shlump into my cave now. Wake me up if a birdie comes flying by, since I might want some lunch. :-D ~pinkfreud |

SHOOT, pinkfreud-just have to pop a Zoloft and go on. Go outside now; the little birdy will be there to fly over your head. Best, Yesmam |

Oh, dear. I crept out of my crypt, and, as you said, the little bird was waiting. He flew over my head, as promised. Anyone know of a product that's good for removing avian doodoo? :-D |

pinkfreud-One would usually post the question about removal of avain poop under "miscellaneous," but I'm going to spare you the trouble and recommend that you use a strong detergent based shampoo like Prell. Do 2 sudsings. Rinse well. I e-mailed Patrick Smith complimenting him for the Zoloft commercial and "the little blob guy." He was grateful and told me that he had called him "dot" but said that he liked "little blob guy" better. Just think, it was a brush with greatness, and the arts community too. It's one thing to have fringy sensibilities, but to learn that there is a "community" of us is so comforting. Yesmam |

Curious: Did you happen to share with him that he was being discussed here? If so, what was his reaction? Keep an eye on this very talented fellow. If insticts serve me, this researcher predicts that the young man is destined for great things in the world of animation and you will have the provileged of reflecting on your brief but personal interaction with him. Hi tutuzdad-I did send the hyperlink of this page to Patrick, but have no idea as to whether or not he will read it. He definately has cool sesibilities because he's so appreciative of compliments about "Little Blob Guy," a.k.a. "Dot." I'm really looking forward to seeing his full-length animation DVDs because if he can do that much with "Blob," then the sky is the limit for other shapes, lines and squiggles. (On his web-site, his DVDs are for sale.) Best, Yesmam |
