Question ID: 233903
How many museums are there in the United States? A breakdown by type
(art, history, etc.) would be nice, but optional - I realize the broad
nature of this question.

Also, are there "professional associations" or societies of museums
sites where I can go explore this further?

Thanks!

Hello kbr1045-ga,

Thank you for your question.

According to the American Association of Museums (AAM) there are an
estimated 16,000 museums in the United States.

“The estimated 16,000 museums in the United States receive more than
850 million visits per year, more than all the country's professional
baseball, football, and basketball sporting events combined.

Since 1906, the American Association of Museums (AAM) has been a
national leader in the museum field. AAM represents museums of every
kind, from art to zoo, advocating for their public service role and
promoting an understanding of their missions and purpose.”

According to Museum Studies at Florida State University, there are
15,000 museums in the United States, 40% of which have been founded
since 1970.

- There are 865 million visits per year to American museums, a 50%
increase from a decade ago.

- In Florida alone there are 390 museums, 39 more than just two years
ago.

- U.S. museums hold more than 700 million objects and associated
documentation of our cultural, artistic, and scientific heritage.”

According to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS),
there are 15,000 museums in the United States.

Equipping Museums and Libraries for the 21st Century
By Steven Hamp
February 14, 2002

“According to IMLS, there are over 15,000 museums in the United
States; 75 percent are considered small museums and 43 percent are
situated in rural areas. Roughly 9 out of 10 counties in America have
at least one museum, in part because every community has its own
unique story to tell to the world. And people want to hear those
stories. As I mentioned above, American museums receive over 865
million visits per year, 2.3 million visits per day, compared with 600
million just a decade ago, and these are people from all income and
education ranges. One-third of Americans say they have visited an art
museum, a history museum, an aquarium, zoo, botanical garden, or
science and technology center within the past six months. Almost a
quarter have gone within the past year. Museums have consistently
ranked in the top three family vacation destinations, according to
data compiled by the Travel Industry Association (TIA).”

According to The City Review magazine http://www.thecityreview.com
there are 1,241 art museums in the United States.

“Lowry noted in an essay in the catalogue that there are 1,241 art
museums in the United States, more than half of which have been opened
since 1970.”

Natural History Museums
=======================

According to Tom Moritz there are 6,500 natural history museums.

“Tom Moritz (American Museum of Natural History) - I think that
question of how we contribute is a really interesting one. We've
actually kicked that around a little bit within the Natural History
community, wondering how profitable it really is to concatenate or to
collect the specific place name work that's being done, and
particularly with our legacy data. (..) As I mentioned, there are 6500
natural history museums.

Children’s Museums
==================

“According to Janet Rice Elman, Executive Director, Association of
Youth Museums, Washington, DC, there are 350 children’s museums in the
United States.”

“There are over 350 children's museums in the United States. The
mission of these museums is to stimulate curiosity and motivate
learning in children. This, in turn, enriches the lives and education
of the children by complementing and supporting the teaching efforts
in homes, schools, child care centers, and communities.”

Bay Mills Community College: Bulletins
http://www.bmcc.org/Headstart/Bulletins/Issue53/pg11-18.htm

From the Myrtle Beach Sun News:

“There are over 300 children's museums in the United States, and 30%
of those have opened in the last ten or fifteen years. So there is a
wider recognition of children's museums as a viable place to go for
interactive family activities," she said.

All fifty of the United States have children's museums. "South
Carolina was the last state to get one," said Lott, "and we're the
currently the only one in the state geared toward children." Many
South Carolina museums are now following the trend toward
interactivity and children's exhibits, he said.”
