I have a simple question and a proper link will satisfy as an answer.

I want to transfer huge files between my two computer. A solution
would probably involve a freeware program to link the two computer
(any other method to link the computer will do)

My pc is an AMD Atholon XP running win xp, 98 and mandrake 9.1 (the
files I want to transfer r in win xp) with 80gb hardisk 512mb ram,
internal modem and ethernet card, usb, serial port etc

The laptop is an IBM R series with wireless modem, modem, usb port,
ethernet card running win 2000.

1. Here is the problem. I dont want to burn disks as I will be
transferring files all the time.
2. only one comuter can get on the net at one time. I have one phone
line so I can't dial up.
3. I dont have a printer cable to connect via the printer L2p

solution might involve connection between
ethernet cards
modem

The only really simple way to transfer these files are by using a
crossover cable (standard Category 5 patch cable with data pairs
switched) and plugging one end into the desktop's ethernet card and
the other end into the laptop's ethernet card. You can use either XP
or 98 for sharing. Simply set a share on the folder or folders the
files are in and copy them over.

They are just like a standard Cat 5 LAN cable *except* two of the
internal wires are switched; they are called crossover cables. On a
normal network setup, there is a hub involved and this particular type
of cable is unnecessary, however if you want to create a short link
directly between two network cards (with no hub) then you must use a
crossover cable, for reasons I won't go into.

Just go to the computer store and ask for a short Cat 5 CROSSOVER
cable. It should cost less than $10 at the most.
