Dear Salem51-ga,
Please note that I am not a physician and do not have any medical
training. I am providing this answer for informational purproses only.
If you have real medical concerns, I would highly recommend that you
speak with a trained physician.
According to the website [
http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/954992292.html ], available from the
Medical College of Wisconson,
"C. difficile is a spore forming bacteria which can be part of the
normal intestinal flora in as many as 50% of children under age two,
and less frequently in individuals over two years of age. C. difficile
is the major cause of pseudomembranous colitis and antibiotic
associated diarrhea."
Basically, under certain circumstances, this bacteria can cause
diarrhea, most frequently in young children, but in adults as well.
The web site above provides further information about the diagnosis
and treatment of conditions caused by the bacteria.
The website [ http://www.aboutibs.org/Publications/CDifficile.html ]
links C. difficile with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and explains
how antibiotic therapy may cause or exacerbate the problem. It notes
that hospitals may be one place where the bacteria thrives due to the
use of large amounts of antibiotics in hospitals.
Finally, the Association of Medical Microbiologists has a FAQ page at
[ http://www.amm.co.uk/pubs/fa_cdiff.htm ] where they confirm that
elderly patients in a hospital may be specifically prone to this
condition.
