I'm trying to identify an object I remember from my childhood. I'd
prefer an exact make and manufacturer, but I only have a limited
description, so I'd settle for information (or even informed
speculation) about what such an object's purpose would be.

The object was approximately 5'x3'x1', made of translucent white
plastic. It has an opaque white plastic frame on the outside, made of
(possibly hollow) tubes about 1cm in diameter. The front (the largest
surface) had a zipper down the middle, going all the way from the top
to the bottom. The two resulting flaps separated from the top (and
possibly the bottom as well) creating a small gap between the front
and top surfaces, and opened vaguely like double doors.

I should emphasize that my 'front' and 'top' are based on how it was
positioned, which may or may not have been the intended positioning.

The inside was entirely featureless, as the frame was all on the
outside. There were absolutely no places to attach anything on the
inside.

It looked kind of like:

    ----------------------
  / /|
 ----------------------- | <-- gap along this ---
 | O | | <-- zipper
 | | | |
 | | | |
 | | | |
 | | | |
 | | | |
 | | | |
 | | | |
 | | | /
-----------------------/ <-- maybe gap here too

I think humansrv is onto something --

How do these compare?

Note that the hanger is not part of the bag, but is protruding through
a hole at the top. Also note that the zipper may be located on the
"front" or edge.

It is rather like the square one you showed but with the zipper on the
large side and slits at the top, but no hole to hand things through.
It was also a lot bigger and not very see-through.

Sounds like a garment bag. Not all interior metal frames at the top
with a 'coat hanger'. Some were used for simple storage - winter
blankets, etc.

I can't help you solve this riddle at all, but I just had to mention
how clever your diagram is. It's absolutely great! I wish others could
learn to do this sort of things. I am truly impressed - no kidding.
