Age 55 and health is a wreck..I want a facility , in house, to go to
to help me get off all the medicine I'm on, help me with diabetes and
hbp and leg pain, etc. I've been to Pritikin, didn't work. I've been
to Duke and Structure House in Durham, didn't work. they emphasized
too much exercise. I'm looking for first class facility here or
overseas...cost no object...I know I'm going to die if I don't get
help and I don't think I'm ready to leave a wife and children that
rich yet. Randy

Good morning,

You describe your problem as one of trying to get off all these drugs
you're taking (I saw the list from your other posted question), yet
both of the places you listed here (Pritikin and Structure house),
that "didn't work" seem to be relaxing spa/resort type places, with
the primary goal of weight loss/developing a healthy lifestyle/eating
pattern. I certainly wouldn't expect for them to be able to help you
get off a whole mess of prescription drugs, and I WOULD expect, as you
said, for them to emphasize excersize, which you probably do not
particularly need. Perhaps you are decieving yourself; this is not a
"fitness and nutrition" problem, but rather one of drug dependancy.

With that said, I'd like to assist you in finding a place that IS
applicable and will help you with this problem. I have located a few
inpatient clinics that would probably be very useful, however I'm
letting you know in advance that they are probably very unlike the
places you've been to already. I'm sure you realize that getting off
of these medications will probably not be easy and possibly quite
unpleasant. However, I commend you for your resolve and thoughts of
your family.

Before I can do some more research and post an answer, I need a little
more information. First, in what country are you located, or where
would be most convenient to go? Keep in mind that a program may take
many weeks. Second, please let me know if you understand the
differences I'm talking about, between the weight-loss facilities
you've tried and the types of clinic I'm describing.

Please clarify so I can help further; I look forward to it.

Regards,
Andrewxmp

Hello again, 211563!

I answered a question for you quite some time ago concerning your
terrible leg pain and provided you with a list of facilities near
Atlanta that could help you with pain management. Perhaps you can
reconsider some of them. They should be able to work within the
paramaters of various medical problems to help you find a solution.
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=144285

Another researcher also provided you with numerous "detoxification"
facilities that you could recommend to a friend who was suffering from
addiction to pain killers. Have you investigated these facilities for
yourself? Perhaps they would be of help if you want to get off some
other pain medications.
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=159061

If none of the facilities listed in the two previous answers seem
"right", perhaps you can clarify what different characteristics you
are looking for in
a facility to avoid duplication.

Best wishes to you,

umiat

Yes, I know difference between the two clinics. I live in United
States. I did consult pain doctors in Atlanta but all they wanted to
do was replace the medicine I was taking with something stronger. It
was tempting but I 'm trying to get medicine free....I knew better. I
live in small town and all doctors but one got Caribbean
diplomas...one went to Duke and I use him but he tried to commit
suicide two years back and he's nuts...I don't think he knew the
addictyive power of the stuff he was giving me...when I stopped taking
all the stuff on my own, I thought I would die. It's the sickest I've
been in my life...I even consideredd suicide and now I'm taking
more...he put me on a chlorestal pill last time I went in and he told
me to take a baby asperin every day. Will this nightmare ever end
and it wassn't a friend, it was me.

Randy,

You should not have tried to detox on your own. There are many
facilities that will ease you through the detoxification process.
There are rapid detox facilities as well as detox facilities which
allow the body to adapt a bit more slowly. Would you consider one of
these facilites for detoxification for yourself, then?
Also, you will still need to find a way to deal with your leg pain
after you have been free of the morphine. That is why the pain clinics
that deliver an anesthetic block may be of help.

thanks, but for some reason I didn't seem to remember getting a list
of detox facilities and out patient facilities. It's not morphine,
its loritabs, those damn things. They are prescribed but damn those
doctors that give them out. However without them, I don't know what
ai would do. My legs hurt so much. No one seems to know why. I've
been to a dozen doctors. They hurt as a small child and hurt today.
Thanks to everone for trying to help. You don't by any chance know
any doctors that will just cut your nerves to your legs do you?

Randy,

Please look at this facility one more time.
The Physicians Pain and Rehabilitation Specialists of Georgia
http://www.thephysicians.com/services.htm

Also look closely at their program for chronic pain management. They
also help to wean patients off painkillers and narcotics.

You might also try an online consultation with the Georgia Pain
Physicians clinic, giving them your complete history including the
narcotic adddiction, and see if they can provide a complete program
for you.

Hello 211563,

You might also give some consideration to the Atlanta Center for
Cognitive Therapy. Soneone there might be able to help you focus on
psychosynthesis of your illness. http://www.cognitiveatlanta.com

Following a medical track, I'd probably investigate someone in the
Endocrine Dept. at Emory University who specializes in syndrome X or
metabolic syndrome and andropause if you fit in that age category.

You might also check into seeing if the Paleo Diet is appropriate for
you. Dr. S. Boyd Eaton, an Emory professor, endorses this diet but
like any diet, it's not without controversy.

"Dr. Loren Cordain, a highly respected, innovative investigator, has
clearly articulated an approach to nutrition that is logically
compelling, readily understood, and at the cutting edge of health
science. Dr. Loren Cordain's original insights, encyclopedic
knowledge, and painstaking research have made critical
contributions.... Not all scientists can translate their concepts into
a straightforward, accessible format, but Cordain has accomplished
this feat brilliantly." --S. Boyd Eaton, M.D., Clinical Assistant
Professor, Emory University; former Medical Director, Olympic Village
Polyclinic, 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games (considered the godfather of
the Paleolithic nutrition movement)."

One doesn't always have to "go away" for a cure unless you live in
some remote location. If you're able to afford a residential care
facility, could you not also pop for a personal chef and trainer in
your own home who could provide some structured guidance? It seems as
if you've tried the "away" approach at three well-respected facilities
that didn't serve you well. It might benefit you to try a different
approach this time.

Best of luck to you,
V

////////////V...thanks for answer. very helpful. Yes,I can afford
anything I want. The diets are so hard to stay on when you get home.
How many years can you soak garbonza beans in mustard water and toast
them in lieu of french fries or potato chips. I'm 55. I am moving.
Made appointment for Monday with respected pain clinic in Atlanta.
Thank you so much and God bless you for your interest.

Ain't it the truth! Which is why I mentioned a personal chef. It
takes true artistic flair to make a garbonzo bean palatable! I'm
afraid none of us have an 'answer' for you. I approached your
question as if I were in your location, had your particular diagnoses,
and your means to address them. Eating on the fly has become an
everyman problem these days. However, you need absolutely everyone on
your side when you're trying to eat healthy. That guy at the fast
food window is handling his job as intended, but a personal chef is
focusing on you and your family's individual needs.

I hated mentioning a diet but eating like the cavemen with the Paleo
Diet seemed to have a common sense flavor to me. Some of us have even
retreated to our 'caves' (huddling behind our computer screens), so
maybe our diet has come full circle, too. Still, every person has to
figure out which diet they can live with as it's very easy to fall on
'automatic' when it comes to the eating ritual.

Bob Greene popularized conscious eating with his book "Making the
Connection" and Oprah delivered it to the masses, but psychosynthesis
is a very old technique developed by an Italian psychiatrist, Roberto
Assagioli, in 1911.  Greene just put a diet spin on the techniques;
however, I do feel it's the key to overall good mental, physical, and
spiritual health. You can read more about it here if you choose:
http://www.aap-psychosynthesis.org/psychosy.html

and if that's too psychomumbojumbo, since I know you're a business
person, you might prefer this link: http://tinyurl.com/i4vv
(redirect).

Just as a personal philosophy, I think we need to look at our lives as
a canvas and 'we' the painters. Just as Picasso went through his Blue
Period and Gauguin his Tahiti Period, we can go through phases that
may or may not be who we really are. At some point we say to
ourselves "Hey, man, I'm not doing -that- anymore" choosing (for
whatever reason) not to paint our lives in that particular style.
Believe me, my personal landscape is littered with its own share of
bacon cheeseburger wrappers.

So to wrap this up, 21, the reasearchers at GA are a caring bunch of
individuals who truly want to help you with your health dilemma.
However, with questions like this one, I'm afraid we're just a mass of
opinions from people who are in their own particular -place-. I hope
you're able to slow yourself down enough to listen to your body for
you indeed hold the key -- and the paintbrush.

It was my sincere pleasure to assist a fellow traveler on this Google
Answers trip. Hopefully, some of the 'answers' you find on this board
will make a difference in your life and, please, take what you need in
the spirit that it's offered.

Blessings returned for good health (and praying for my own personal
chef ;- ),
V
