I am looking for a good online company that specializes in the
printing of black and white images. Specifically, I am looking for a
business (similar to ofoto.com or snapfish.com) that allows you to
upload images as .JPG files to a website, order photo-quality prints,
and have them delivered by mail. Most major online photo shops do a
poor job with B&W images: the prints often come out with a horrible
green, magenta, or pink tint to them. This occurs because they use a
color print process, that will only produce good b&w prints if the
red/green/blue lasers are perfectly calibrated.

A correct answer will consist of the URL of an online photo shop that
specifically promises good black and white prints, and mentions
special procedures or equipment for handling B&W images differently
from color images. The site should be price competitive, i.e., around
$0.50 for a 4x6, or $4 for an 8x10. I am NOT looking for a high end
expensive digital services bureau.

There are monochrome ink options for some inkjet printers, if you
wanted a do-it-yourself option. One discussion is at

Thank you for the interesting link. However, I am looking for an
online service, not a do-it-yourself option.

I found some places offering Quadtone printing, which apparently is
state of the art for black and white photography. However, the prices
were significantly above your targets.

Were you ever able to find a service? I am looking for the same thing
and am interested in primarily 4x6 and 5x7 prints. These are for home
use, nothing professional.

You could try http://www.webphotoforum.com/prints.asp?aID=1688. It's
not quite to your size or budget (£10 [about $15] for a 10x8), but
Chris who runs it is very approachable and will no doubt be able to
make you an offer for what you want. He should be able to set his
printer up for B&W.

Although they don't have a dedicated B&W process, I just tried this
shop, and they did a reasonable job with several B&W 8x10's:

http://www.photoaccess.com

No commercial endorsement is implied.

I'd still like to see an online digital photo service that specializes
in B&W.

I sell photography at: http://buyourart.com/naturalwonders/index.html

The only service I use is: http://www.shutterfly.com

I've tried Snapfish (joke) and EZprints(always damaged) and have had
to demand refunds and credits.. Shutterfly is the only developer I've
NEVER had problems with .. They CHEMICALLY DEVELOP digital
photos...which makes the difference over PRINTER prints..

They'll give you 15 FREE 4x6's to test it out ...

http://pictopia.com is the best online printer I've seen for
black-and-white prints. But they are for professional use only. They
don't print consumer-market sizes pictures. 8x10 and up I believe...

I know that both Kodak and Ilford make silver based digital b&w paper that
is sensitive to laser light of a digital printer and can be processed
traditionally. The results I have seen are fairly good, not as good as
traditional rc paper in tonal range and richness of blacks but probably
fine for your price range. Using this paper is labor intensive in a lab
so you are unlikely to find anyone who can compete with your local drugstore
minilab prices!
Try Miller's, a pro lab in Kansas. They have equipment
that prints on silver based digital photo paper which is
processed through standard b&w photo chemistry. They do
the smaller sizes you need. http://www.millerslab.com/
There may be a difficulty! I have heard that they don't take
non-professional customers. Good luck!
