When I was a kid in the low-tech era (65 years ago) hucksters would
charge a fee to inspect through a microscope, a text alledgedly
written on the head of a pin. The text could be the Lord's Prayer or
something of similar length. Was it possible in that era to engrave
text that tiny, and if so, was it done? Or was it a hoax?

Hello there

The Lords Prayer on the head of a pin is only one example of the
miniature marvels which have been created by various people.

Some of the others include:

Life - A man is displayed walking on a minuscule spring. The man, 5
microns in size, is made of gold. This human image is the finest in
the world.

The Portrait - The portrait of the great Ukrainian poet T. Shevchenko
is carved out of a thorn stone with a sapphire knife. Using the same
technique, the artist has carved out portraits of the great Ukrainian
singer Solomia Kruselnitskaya and Abraham Lincoln.

The Swallows - A swallows' nest is made from a poppy seed, inlaid with
gold. The swallows and their fledglings are also made of gold and are
only 5 microns thick.

The Chessmen - A tiny chessboard is placed on a pinhead. The piece
arrangement is taken from a game between Alexander Aliokhin (black)
and Raul Capablanca (white), for the 1927 world championship. The
chessmen are made of gold.

The Flowering Branch - An apple seed is cut in half and a watercolour
painting of a flowering branch has replaced the cleaned out contents
of the seed.

The Cavalcade - A caravan sails down the sands. A pyramid and a palm
tree are seen from a distance. The whole composition is made of gold
and placed in the eye of a needle.

More about these miniatures, including photos, here:
http://www.bdb.co.za/shackle/articles/sculptures.htm - "world's
smallest sculptures" - you will also find reference to Schiller's
Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin which is covered again below.

Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin:

"Convicted forger A. Schiller was serving his time in Sing Sing prison
in the late 1800s when guards found him dead in his cell. On his body
they found seven regular straight pins whose heads measured the
typical 47/1000ths of an inch or 1.17 millimeters in diameter. Under
500 magnification it was found that the tiny etchings seen on the
heads of the pins were the words to The Lord's Prayer, which is 65
words and 254 letters long. Of the seven pins, six were silver and one
was gold - the gold pin's prayer was flawless and a true masterpiece.
Schiller had spent the last 25 years of his life creating the pins,
using a tool too small to be seen by the naked eye. It is estimated
that it took 1,863 sepatate carving strokes to make it. Schiller went
blind because of his artwork." - quote from "anomalies unlimited" - a
photo of one of the pins is
here:http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Prayer.html

This next page is from a remarkable website and also mentions
Schiller's carving. The website is from the Physics Department at the
University of Wisconsin. -
http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/pickover/pc/pencil.html - so, there is
a good possibility that the prayer on a pin you saw years ago was
quite real.

Now, if you think that the Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin is small
- read about this guy, Eduard Ghazarian. He sculpts between
heartbeats because the pulse creates motions which can destroy all of
his work. - - Just one example which was carved on a human hair:

"On one hair he has carved a television set which, when moved shows 40
different models of cars that, when moved forward reveal a statue of
Charlie Chaplin." - http://www.armeniaweek.com/feb082002/miniature.html
- From ArmeniaWeek - "Small Feat: Sculptor makes magic on micro-sized
material"

I can see only one problem with collecting micro-miniatures. Just one
sneeze at the wrong time and the whole collection is scattered to the
winds.

If I may clarify anything before you rate the answer, please ask.

Thanks, digsalot. It is somewhat incomprehensible how such miniature
sculpture is possible. The fellow in prison who did such remarkable
work must have had magnifiers and special tools...hard to believe
SingSing would provide amenities in the 19th century. Anyhow, you
clarified the issue. Being cynical, I thought most of these items were
hoaxes.

It was possible as of 1959:

mvguy-ga: Thanks for your comment and reference. I strongly suspect
that back in the good old days, it was a hoax...probably the
*microscope* contained a fake image...but I'm not sure.
