Question ID: 235269
I am trying to get into my system and I lost my password for the bios.
(I had setup a bios password). There are several tools for doing this
I suppose. I found a program called cmospwd.exe which should get it my
password with the following steps.
1. boot up with dos
2. use the program.
But since there is a password on the Bios I cannot seem to get to dos
because the bios asks for my password first (the one that I have
forgotten).

Hi, thank you for your response. To clarify: I don't want to flash the
bios . I would like to know how to use the software I mentioned or
similar software.
Thanks.

If you cannot boot your PC, no one software will be useful to you,
because you donīt want to flash your BIOS or you prefer to leave this
possibility as the last chance, please try using back door passwords,
the following pages gives you a list of them, may be it works or not,
but there is an opportunity:
"Back Door BIOS Passwords":
http://www.spcomputing.com/bios_center/backdoor_passwords.php

"BIOS Master Password(s)":
http://www.11a.nu/FILES/!BIOS/SRC/DOS/unpacked/DOCS/BIOSDEF1.LST

For the "How to use the cmospwd.exe program" see the README file:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/cmospwd.txt

Again if it works, please let me know in order to post the answer, if
not also let me know in order to continue researching.

I will wait for your response.
Hope this helps

Clarification of Question by willwillwillwill2003-ga on 26 Jul 2003 19:43 PDT
Thanks again, I had already tried the backdoor passwords listed in the
links. The last link is the one with the instructions to use the
software program
http://www.cgsecurity.org/cmospwd.txt
it says
in step 2. to boot from Dos. I created a boot disk but before it will
let me boot in Dos it requires the bios password. I don't understand
this as the purpose is be able to get in without the password???
Here are the instructions
Thanks
Ķ Typical Usage for DOS and all Windows users Ķ
---------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------

1) Identify your BIOS manufacturer (usually displayed at boot-up)

2) Start in DOS, or start a DOS session in Windows 95/98/ME.
For Windows NT or Windows 2000 boot from a DOS or Windows 95/98
boot
disk (you can find boot disks at www.AnswersThatWork.com), and
run
CMOSPWD from your boot floppy (or another floppy).

3) C: [Enter]
    CD\CMOS_Pwd [Enter]

4) Type CMOSPWD at the DOS prompt and press Enter.

5) CMOSPWD will display a list of possibilities. Use the
possibilities
    itemised against your BIOS manufacturer.
    Remember :

         a) For AWARD BIOSes, use the Numeric Keypad (with NumLock
ON).
         b) AWARD 4.50PG BIOS always accepts "AWARD_SW", or "d8on",
             or "589589".
         c) Old Phoenix BIOSes will accept "phoenix".

6) If the standard method does not work, then try to kill
the CMOS password with CMOSPWD /K (and press Enter),
and then see if you can get into the CMOS without a password.
If you can, you successfully "killed" the old CMOS password.
DO NOT KILL THE CMOS on IBM ThinkPad 765 laptops.

7) If you cannot kill the CMOS with CMOSPWD, then try the following,
all done from the DOS prompt of real DOS or of a DOS session :

               DEBUG [Enter]
               O 70 2E [Enter]
               O 71 0 [Enter]
               Q [Enter]

(The first character of each line above MUST be a letter, so
whenever
you see "O", read it as the letter "O" and not the digit ZERO,
"0").

At this time i am in the same position than you. I am wondering about
how to boot the PC if you donīt have the password.
I think that the password is for access to the BIOS (and change the
configuration for example) and not for boot.
Please tell me if some of the back door passwords work or not, and
also give me a more clear question to continue researching; I need to
know where you are right now in relation to this problem.

Thank you

Hi, thanks again, I tried the backdoor passwords. The bios is a
Phoenix and I tried all the passwords in lower and upper case but none
worked. That is all I could do. I still don't known how to use that
software.

I think that your only chance is to clear the CMOS memory, if you will
do that, do it carefully after reading the documents that I gave you
in my first post.

Good luck!!

You will have to get the name and model of your mother board. Go to
the MFG website and search for lost bios password. There should be an
internal jumper that will allow you to bybass the password. All most
all mother boards have this feature.

Good Luck!!

Thank you for the information. Someone had set a password on a
computer at our church, but they have since left and unavailable to
tell me what the password is. I didn't previously know about the
jumper to reset the bios. It almost seemed too easy!! Thanks again.
