Question ID: 235282
I have a fuzzy noise coming from my speakers that is apparent
especially when instant messages are sent. While the IM noise is
still running but at a silent point, a huge fuzz is heard in the
speakers. I believe it is there at all times, though it is possible
that it's only there during instant messages. I've muted all playback
sounds except for WAVE and MASTER. I'm using a Turtle Beach Santa
Cruz sound card.

Additionally, there is a distinct buzz or fuzz noise when I use my
microphone, even when nothing is being said (and it cannot really be
heard when I do speak). Is there any way to fix this or is it just
something that we have to deal with with computer microphones?

Please post possible solutions as clarifications as they are not
guaranteed to work. I will post if they do work immediately after
testing them.

Thanks,
chis-ga

Maybe something is loose. The jack plugs of your speaker or mic to
your sound card, the power plug of the speaker system, or maybe a dial
or switch on your speaker system that had become loose. Sound can also
be heard when air, like from an electric fan, blows into a microphone.
See also if any loose wiring in your computer gets caught on any of
the sound card parts. Maybe the sound card itself may be loose, or
dirty, so you might need to clean the contacts to the PCI slot.

I've tried cleaning it and taking it out and putting it back in, but
it doesn't seem to work. Could anyone test this AIM instant message
sound on their computer at a fairly loud volume to see if the fuzz is
there?

brakk0 gave a good suggestion that it may be the sound card. However,
the fuzz is there even when I switch to the onboard sound that came
with my computer!

If the fuzz happens on either the separate sound card or the onboard
sound, I believe neither of them have a problem. My guess is the
speakers or the soundcard driver now. Try your speakers on the
different system (with AOL IM too) to see if that's the problem.

Hmmm.. you say you have the buzzing sound when you use AOL IM? Does it
only happen when you use AOL IM? You could try reinstalling that... or
see if any preference settings there are letting weird sound through.
Probably the mic sensitivity's too high.

Could someone try downloading the newest version of AIM at the web
site (www.aim.com) and see if this happens for him as well?

I think the noise is being generated by your sound card. When it plays
the wav file for an IM, it starts the wav playback which is generating
the noise but you can only hear it during the quiet parts of the wave.
The same thing with your microphone. When it enables the microphone,
it starts generating its own noise.

You could try updating the drivers for your sound card.

If that doesn't work, try changing it for a cheap sound card and see
if it goes away.
