Please provide a list of public/private entities that have been
created on the state and local level to provide help to businesses
seeking capital to expand or create new ventures.
For example, on the state level, both Oklahoma and Michigan have set
aside a portion of their state pension funds to provide money for
Venture Capital Funds they have established.
On the local level, Orange County, New York, recently created the
Orange County Capital Development Corporation that does not invest
money itself, but provides coordination/referal services to firms that
are looking for outside Venture Capital investors.
Please include the name, contact information, and/or website address
of each. |

Hello laker-ga,
I've been looking for a way to answer your question and I must say,
it's turning out to be elusive. There are so many public/private
organizations at the international, national, state, regional and
local levels, that it would be a herculean task to organize it all,
and get up to date contact information.
There are a few web directories of venture capital/business assistance
entities, as well as a number of reports by government and
quasi-government groups that detail many of the publicy-launched or
publicly-assisted programs in this area.
I can certainly lead you to key resources like these, if you think
that would be useful. But first, I will unlock the question to see if
perhaps another researcher can have more luck (or fortitude) than I
have in piecing together the information you are seeking.
If your question remains unanswered after a while, let me know if you
would like details on the various sources of information I have found
on this topic.

Dear Easterangel-ga:
Thank you for your answer. Please carifiy two items:
1. There is nothing listed at the state level for New York. Is this
because no such entities exist?
2. All the organizations you've listed have been funded, but I also
need to identify entities like the newly-formed Orange County (New
York) Capital Development Corporation, which will have no funding of
its own, but will serve as a clearing house or referral agency to
connect new ventures with private sector investors. I'm particularly,
but not solely, interested in the Northeast. Can you identify any
similarly unfunded entities and provide contact information for them
as well?

Hi again laker-ga! Thanks for asking a clarification before providing
a rating.
1.) I was able to find the following entities providing this type of
service for the state of New York.
The New York Community Investment Company
http://www.nycic.com/about/
http://www.nycic.com/contact.html
New York State Small Business Development Center
http://www.nyssbdc.org/
http://www.nyssbdc.org/Locations2/locations2.cfm
Small Business Technology Investment Fund
http://www.nylovesbiz.com/High_Tech_Research_and_Development/investment_fund.asp
2.) Your second point of clarification is a lot harder than I
presumed. It seems that they are called capital connection networks
and assist businesses to find venture capital funding. Here are the
organizations I was able to locate.
Florida Venture Capital Forum
http://www.flvencap.org/
CITY OF CAMBRIDGE
Community Development Department
Economic Development Division
http://www.ci.cambridge.ma.us/~CDD/econdev/capital/
ARIZONA BUSINESS CONNECTION
http://www.commerce.state.az.us/webapps/SmallBusVR/intro.asp
ACE-Net
http://acenet.csusb.edu/
The Capital Connection website provides a list of Small Business
Development Centers. The website describes small business development
centers as...
"Small Business Development Centers provide assistance to businesses
in many areas. You can receive free consulting, help with your
business plan, marketing, and help obtaining financing. Many SBDCs
also present free or very low cost workshops and seminars on topics of
interest to small and mid size businesses."
http://www.capital-connection.com/sbdc.html
The contact addresses for small business development centers in
different states are available in the following links:
Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia
http://www.capital-connection.com/sbdcaz.html
California
http://www.capital-connection.com/sbdcca.html
Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi,
Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico
http://www.capital-connection.com/sbdcidaho.html
New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas,
West Virginia, Wisconsin
http://www.capital-connection.com/sbdc3.html
I hope that these additional links enriches my original answer.

Dear Easterangel-ga:
Thank you. Your answer and clarification provide a lot of information
I can use. Just one last clarification:
You indicated that capital-connection.com serves New Jersey. Other
than this entity, are there any other public/private venture capital
funds or capital connection centers that serve New Jersey?
Thanks again!
