Thanks for asking.
As a WindowsXP user myself, I've experienced the same type of errors
when trying to install or run programs produced for older Operating
System versions. I have several possible solutions for you to try.
The first step is to perform a web search and see if the driver can be
located. I've found one at:
MacKichan Software, Inc.
ftp://ftp.mackichan.com/downloads/sh33w32.dll
To download the driver and install it on your system:
-- Right-click on the link above
-- Select Save Target As
-- In the Save As Pop-up, the "Download" folder is probably selected.
If not, make a note of the folder name.
-- Select the SAVE button (lower right of the pop-up)
-- When the download is finished, select the OPEN FOLDER option in
the "Download Complete" pop-up.
-- Using Windows Explorer, open two more folders. You'll need all
three open at the same time:
C:\Windows\System
C:\Windows\System32
-- Copy the driver to both the System and System32 folders
(drag and drop).
Try starting the program. You may need to reboot your system before
the changes take effect.

Sometimes, a driver upgrade doesn't provide the complete solution.
I've discovered that TLC-Edusoft's Family Tree Maker software has been
acquired by Mindscape. Mindscape provides Technical Support assistance
on their website, and specifically addresses your query in their
listing of Common Problems:
I have Windows 2000 or Windows XP, will my title work with this
version of Windows?
Mindscape says: "If the box for the product clearly shows XP or 2000
as being a compatible operating system, then yes.
If it doesn't show XP or 2000 at all on the box, then we can't promise
it'll work. Below are some ideas on getting a non-XP title to work in
XP."
Due to copyright concerns, I'm not allowed to quote the entire set of
instructions, however, those instructions are easily accessed by
clicking this link:

Still no luck?

Again, from Mindscape, another set of troubleshooting steps.
The program installs ok but when its run I get an illegal
operation, run time error, fatal exception or other error
message.
Mindscape recommends trying this possible solution first:

Several further troubleshooting steps are also listed at:
Mindscape - Common Problems (Details) #120

If these steps do not solve the problem, Mindscape offers Tech Support
via e-mail at:
Mindscape - Tech Support Email (English)
uktechsupport@mindscape.com
Further Tech Support is available by telephone (within the U.K.)
"For customer service and technical support enquiries, please contact:
0906 2165 432 (calls are charged at 25p per minute). Lines are open
from 9.30 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 16.30, Monday to Friday excluding
public holidays."
It appears, subsequent to Mindscape's acquisition of the TLC-Edusoft
Family Tree program, they're updating it for a new version, due for
release on August 8, 2003. Although not the most ideal solution, this
version -is- XP compatible.

I hope these suggestions will offer a "perfect fix" for Family Tree
compatibility with WinXP. Please let me know how it goes. If you have
any questions about the information or links I've provided, please,
feel free to ask.
