Scdo1, There are many regulatory challenges of interest to the internet. I've chosen a few of interest to myself and I hope that you'll find them interesting as well! One of the most common issues to arise is how regulation should affect freedom of speech on the internet. Are there limits to what is considered "acceptable" speech? What privacy or anonymity should be accorded to those who express themselves on the internet? Should libraries be required to place software that censors what patrons may view? [ http://www.eff.org/CAF/cafuiuc.html ] This page presents material that gives pointers to potential issues with censorship and the internet. I would also recommend EFF's home website [ http://www.eff.org ] because the Electronic Frontier Foundation is frequently involved in issues about the internet and free speech. [ http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/00/05/cyber/cyberlaw/05law.html ] This is an article from the NY Times which provides further links to sites that have information about the internet and censorship. Currently, a US law prevents states from charging sales tax if the items are shipped outside the state. Obviously, this means that individuals purchasing goods via the internet can avoid state sales tax by purchasing from a company outside their home state instead of from a local merhcant. Google's cache has a story from ECommerce Times which details the various issues involved: [ http://216.239.57.104/search?q=cache:tlMs9fozdkAJ:www.ecommercetimes.com/perl/story/11590.html+state+tax+laws+internet+sales&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 ] Story from 2001 about sales taxes on the internet. [ http://www.entrepreneur.com/Your_Business/YB_SegArticle/0,4621,307444,00.html ] Entrepeneur gives some details about current laws Search Strategy: [ ://www.google.com/search?as_q=state+tax+laws+internet+sales&num=100&hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=images ] Google Search: state + tax + laws + internet + sales I hope this provides you with enough information to continue your reseach. Here's one more link to a Google Search that may provide you with more ideas about internet regulation: Search strategy: [ ://www.google.com/search?as_q=internet+regulation&num=100&hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=law+legal+&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=images ] Google Search: internet + regulation + (law OR legal) Please advise if you need more assistance! Good luck in your research! /ephraim |
