From what book or play is this quote
"live fast, dress young and have a good looking horse"

I heard the quote in a television version of the play in 1986,
probably on BBC2. The play was set in the wild west. This rules out
Tom Stoppard's "Invention of Love,".

Perhaps it was a corpse and not a horse?

It sounds vaguely like a line from Tom Stoppard's "Invention of Love,"
but I don't have the text in front of me, so it would be a total
guess.
