Dear Seekinganswer,
In a review of Bush's visit to Senegal, Time Magazine mentioned the
air conditioning issue: "Even when the president leaned in to the
crowd to shake hands, few rose to snatch a moment with him. Those who
did seemed to receive a double dose from an energetic president who
looked well cooled by an air conditioning vent built into the platform
to push cool air directly under the speaker's feet." (Source: JOHN
DICKERSON, "In Senegal, Bush Speaks Against Slavery", Times Magazine,
July 9th, 2003 <http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,463671,00.html>).
The Dallas Morning News also refers to this: "A plywood platform was
built over a newly poured concrete foundation for the president's
speech outside the island's old stone fort, now a museum. An
air-conditioning duct was cut just behind the president's bulletproof
[sic.] lectern to provide some relief on a hot, hazy day." (Source: G.
