I have found the following two resources to be invaluable to my work
as a Researcher:
http://www.zapdata.com/zapmarkets/"industry reports free market
analysis" zapdata.com
"At zapdata.com you can create detailed market analysis reports within
seconds. This free market information provides you with key facts for
a better understanding of your target market. Free, fast, and easy --
these industry research reports would typically cost $100 or more and
would take weeks to generate from other business sources. Now you can
build SIC code industry reports in real-time using up-to-date D&B
business data."
Note that free registration is required to use this resource. A
user-friendly procedure is employed to allow you to arrive at the
proper SIC code for the industry you are seeking. Then, you can
generate a report incorporating a variety of statistics of the type
you are seeking.
http://valuationresources.com/IndustryReport.htm "Industry Resources
Report" Valuation Resources.com
"Industry Resources Reports list resources available from trade
associations, industry publications, and research firms which address
subjects such as industry overview, issues, trends, and outlook,
financial benchmarking, compensation surveys, and valuation
resources."
These are sorted by SIC code. The listing is not quite as
comprehensive as the previous source, but the links for the industries
they do have are quite impressive.
I hope these two resources meet your needs. Please request
clarification if needed.
Sincerely,
Wonko |

Thanks Wonko
The D&B/Zapadata is pretty comprehensive. The second URL seems to have
hyperlinks for most industries, but not all the links are populated
with data.
This gets me 70% there. Did you discover additional resources that
talk about growth rates of these industries, and list of top players
in each ?
(From my original question. "The motivation is to identify large
industry segments, growth trends, and market leaders")
I would be satisfied with a list that was limited to top 50 or 100 by
revenue size, or fastest growing, or fastest shrinking etc.

Thank you for letting me know I am on the right track. I have found
some additional free sources of information, along with a couple of
subscription-based services that you may find useful.
Please request further clarification if needed.

Wonko
The US Census Bureau has a number of reports that appear to be
relevant.
http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/recent.htm "How to Find that Latest
Business Data" US Census Bureau has, in particular, a "Quarterly
Financial Report" with growth rates by industry.
The 1997 Economic Census of the U.S. Census Bureau, the most current
one available, accessible via
http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/econ97.html, allows comparison of data
between the 1997 Economic Census in the 1992 Economic Census. Figures
from the 2002 Economic Census will be available next year.
Fortune magazine compiles a number of largest company lists (both US
and global), accessible via http://www.fortune.com/fortune/alllists,
that can be sorted by industry. A subscription is required, however.
Another source of data, most of which requires a subscription, is
Hoover's Online, accessible via http://www.hoovers.com/free/. US and
global company data are available.
