I was lead to believe I could use the google seach engine to search
yahoo groups ie. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO/messages.
Is this possible, I tried it with the "site:" tool. No luck

i am afraid that what you are trying is not possible.
"site:" is not meant for accepting urls. it accepts only FQDN. 

So you may wish to search 
CAD CAM site:groups.yahoo.com
