Hi,
I have been designing home theaters for about a year. I have a web
page but it is through a friends web page. I want to get my own
domain but I think I need a new name before I invest in a domain. The
business name I currently have is ˇ§All Star Home Theatersˇ¨ but I
donˇ¦t feel the name flows or portrays what my business niche is. I
would like a name that is easy to remember and easy to find when
someone is running a web search for home theaters. Currently, I
primary design home theaters for do-it-yourselfers but, I donˇ¦t want
to limit myself to just those clients.

Hereˇ¦s a brief history of my venture into home theater designing. In
2001 I contacted the largest audio & video magazine to see if they
wanted to feature our home in an upcoming article. Shortly, a writer
from the magazine contacted me and said yes, they would like to
feature our home and questions in an upcoming issue. The issue came
out in the fall of 2001. The 5-page article with many color photos
featured three experts giving advice about our home theater setup and
equipment purchases. This expert advice, and the desire to have a
first rate home theater started us down the road to do exactly that.
During the next 10 months, we researched, spoke with experts, ask a
lot of questions, designed and built (we did 95% of the work) a high
quality theme Mexican Courtyard home theater, complete with fiber
optics twinkling stars. The magazine was so impressed they featured
our completed theme home theater in another issue in the fall of 2002.
We receive so many calls from readers asking for advice I decided to
start a home theater design business, but with a different twist.

Most electronic companies that design home theaters only work with
clients that are willing to spend many thousands of dollars. They
want the client to purchase all the electronics from them and they
handle the installation as wellˇK for big bucks. These businessˇ¦
must do the whole design, sell the equipment and installation because
they have large overhead. But, the customer pays for service. This
is fine for people who have huge budgets but what about the people
with smaller budgets and who are willing to do some or all of the
manual labor... themselves!

Since I live in a remote area, starting a home theater business the
ˇ§normal storefrontˇ¨ avenue wasnˇ¦t an option. I design home
theaters from my home and communication to the client is via e-mail
and phone, I will even travel to their location if they want. I have
had customers from all over the US, such as, New Mexico, Philadelphia,
Michigan; I even have a potential customer in Singapore. I charge by
the hour and have no minimum required hours. I recently worked for a
client for 3 hours; he only wanted questions answered and a floor
plan. Since I donˇ¦t sell nor endorse any products I offer the client
an unbiased opinion

Hereˇ¦s a list of my services;

„h Travel to a clientˇ¦s future home theater location to gain an
understanding of their goals and to make suggestions.
„h Design a normal home theater or create one-a-kind theme home
theater.
„h 3d color pictures showing how the new home theater will look.
„h Floor Plan Layout.

Greetings Upnorth:

I have conceived the following business names for you and have checked
for their availibility for purchase. Currently, all the domain names
below are available. I do suggest you go with a dotcom as opposed to
".net" or ".org" so I have kept my suggestions to the dotcom names.

DesigningHomeCinemas.com

CinemaPersonal.com

CinemaMine.com
[I like this takeoff on the movie title "Enemy Mine" but it may denote
a movie collection instead of your purpose. However, I wanted to
include it for your consideration.]

CinematicHome.com

HomeCinematic.com

CinemagicHomeTheater.com

PersonalCinemagic.com

HomeCinemagic.com

LightsCameraActionHTD.com
[HTD = HomeTheaterDesign]

TakeOneHomeTheaterDesign.com

TakeOneHTD.com

[Slogan either of these with something like "Our design is the only
take you'll need for a successful shot at the perfect home theatre"]

HomeCinematrix.com

ContinuityHTD.com

HouseLightsHTD.com

MasterShotHomeTheaterDesign.com

MasterShotHTD.com

["Master Shot - A single shot, usually a wide shot, that incorporates
the whole scene from beginning to end. Typically a master shot will be
filmed first, and then all the close-ups and other shots afterwards."
From http://homepage.newschool.edu/~schlemoj/film_courses/glossary_of_film_terms/glossary.html
- This is actually what you do with desgin from beginning to end -
first, the overview and then the details.]

PerfectExposureHTD.com

CloseUpHTD.com

*************************

I used some industry terms in my ideas as well as abbreviating "home
theater design" as "HTD" - with any of these domain names, you would
also have a keyword string on all your pages to identify your service
but I chose names that *I* would relate to "home theater" and the
services you offer. Should you require clarification (or additional
suggestions), please request thusly and I'll be happy to respond.

Best regards,
journalist-ga

SEARCH STRATEGY:

whois [domain name availibility search - you may search their records
for available domain names at
http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/whois/ - it takes about three
times longer to make the searches than it used to because they have
inserted a entry code into each individual search]

Hi journalist-ga,
Thank you for the name suggestions. I like a lot of the names, so far
the one that jumps at me is designinghomecinemas.com except I may
change it to designinghometheaters.com (The name really tells in three
words what I do). I think the word cinemas is used more for
commerical movie outlets and theater is used for personal home
theaters. But, I like many of the other names as well. I'll be
dicussing your suggestions with the boss (wife) and let you know.

What is your feeling about having a name as whatever.com instead of
just using a name without the dot com. Also, if you have any
additional suggestions I would sure appreciate them.

Thanks

Upnorth:

I'm delighted you like my suggestions and I'll brainstorm for more. I
chose the word cinema because it paints a more professional picture
for me. I checked at WhoIs and DesigningHomeTheaters.com is currently
available.

Regarding "What is your feeling about having a name as whatever.com
instead of just using a name without the dot com." - that is certainly
an option but I would keep the URL as a regular dotcom instead of
"yourname.com.com"

Best regards,
journalist-ga

Sorry for the delay, but due to an upcoming magazine article I had to
expedite my name selection and get my new site built. After much
consideration, I used part of your suggestion, and went with Designing
Home Theaters.com. The name says everything I want it to.

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions and help. The name
Designing Home Theaters.com wouldn't have been possible without your
help.

Thanks again,
Upnorth-GA
