Don't laugh. I am using MS Word. A correct answer consists of
telling me how to enter page numbers cosisting of a number and letter.
 Example: 1A 1B, 1C, 1D, etc. And secondly, how to make the page
numbers appear outside the margins.

Hello Tibiaron,

Here is a sequence that you can use to demonstrate page numbers
similar to what you are looking for.

Start Word

in the empty document

View -> Header and Footer

you should get a floating toolbar. The first button next to "AutoText"
is the page number. Click it once to insert a (the default) numeric
page number.

Insert ->Field

select category Numbering
select Page
select Options
select A, B, C, ...
select Add To Field
(you may get a pop up window indicating this does not change the
default page number format)

it should display something such as
PAGE \* ALPHABETIC
in the dialog box

select OK

At this point, the header should show 1A. The 1 is from the inserted
page number (default format) and the A is from the inserted field.

select close (on the floating tool bar)

Test the formatting by using

Insert -> Break -> Page Break

repeatedly and the page number will go to 2B, 3C, and so on.

At this point you have an item in the header that you can copy and
paste into the document you want to have the odd formatted page
numbers.

Generally, the way to get the text outside the margins, you need to
put this text into a "frame" or a "text box" and then move tit where
you want it. The steps I use are a little clumsy but are...
  select the text to move
  Insert -> Text Box
  shrink the box to the right size & format to remove the boundary
  move the text box where you want it (outside the margins)
That should give you the results you asked for.

For more information, I suggest a look at the MS Word online help.
Search using
  text box
  frame
  header
  field
and similar phrases.

I followed your sequence and had success. The answer is a credit to
you, but certainly nothing Microsoft should be proud of. They need to
contact Word Perfect and learn how to write a program.

Thanks
