Question ID: 236348
I have a netscape messenger 4.7. I use it for email. But when i get
links in email I do not want that link to be opened in Netscape
instead I want that to be opened in my default browser internet
explorer. This "user_pref("network.protocol-handler.external.http",
true);" does not seem to work which i changed in pref.js file.

Hello regopark,

Have you tried the free program SetBrowser?

Let me know if this solves your problem. Works for me very well, but I
do not have Netscape on my system.

Regards,

If i didnt have Netscape installed then that wont be a problem. I have
Netscape 4.7 and IE installed in my computer. I use Netscape messenger
for my emails. IF I open links from other programs it opens in IE
because I have set it up as my default browser. The problem is when I
use netscape messenger for email. Any links that I click on from
Netscape messenger opens in NETSCAPE. I want it to open in IE..

Hi regopark,

I have a similar setup, with an even older version of NS (4.61) which
I keep because I much prefer the older Messenger Mail program to its
new versions, and other mail programs.

Check your ...Program Files\Netscape\Users\[your username] folder.
There may be a second prefs file with a slightly different name. If
so, make identical changes to the second file.

Remember, Netscape must be closed, and you should backup the original
file(s) before saving the changes. I usually reboot following changes
to the prefs files, rather than just reopening Netscape.

Let me know how this works.

Hi,

A workaround (somewhat of a pain, but will probably get what you want
until you find a better solution) might be to drag the link from
Netscape Messenger onto your desktop, and then double-click the icon
on the desktop, which should then open in IE (since it's the default
browser).

Good luck,
smudgy.

Another suggestion (not what you're looking for, but perhaps useful)
would be to ditch NS4.7.

I kept that old piece of junk around for a long time myself because of
Messenger (I just don't like Eudora; Outlook / OE are inexcusable; I
don't like Mulberry, etc). The later Mozillas have a proper mail
client in the style of the old Netscape, and it imports your old mail
and settings just fine. As a bonus, you get a browser vastly superior
to either IE or old Netscape.

Did you try going into the prefrences of your mail program and setting
the defaults in there to Internet Explorer?
