I've noted from some of your other posts that you live in Santiago.
Hope you can find a couple of fun places that will be open on Saturday
and/or Sunday 8/23-24. I realize that these may not exist in
Santiago, but figure you'll know the answer or where to find it:

A VINTAGE MOVIE POSTER SHOP, but one where the posters /memorabilia
will be in Spanish (or other foreign languages). Not English.

A JOKE or GAG STORE. e.g., where they have exploding sugars and silly
stuff -- but again, the boxes/labels must be in Spanish or a foreign
langauge.

Aside from Los Deominicos, where there is a bit of old stuff, are
there any weekend flea markets -- or stores -- for antique-y, vintage
collectibles and jewelry? NOT serious antiques. I'm told the
earthquakes over the years pretty much means there's not much "old
stuff" in Santiago. . . but it can't hurt to ask.

Any other thoughts for a store for souvenirs, funny food products
(aside from the Mercando Central), silly or ironic doo dads? There's
a fine line between typical tourist stuff and ktisch/camp. . .I lean
toward the latter. Example: At a local grocery I bought friends
packets of "SPRIM" and "SPRIM - LIGHT!" Who the hell knew what it
was, really. . . I guess it's Chilean Kool-Aid. . . but the nonsenese
words are fun and that's the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Problem is, there won't be a lot of time. Will be staying in
Providencia, near the El Salvador metro. Thanks!

Hello Cryptica,

I’m sorry for the delay but I was waiting for my daughters to come
home this evening in order to ask them for additional ideas.

=================
Joke or Gag Store
=================

BROMANIA
Apumanque Shopping Center
Corner Apoquindo and Manquehue
Phone: 212-7643
Open everyday until 9:00 PM
This shop is located in a kiosk on the first floor of this mall.
They sell spicy candy and gum and assorted humorous products for
bachelor & bacholerette parties. Some are labeled in Spanish.

===============
Handicraft Fair
===============

PLAZA ARTESANO MANQUEHUE
Located next to Apumanque Shopping Mall

You can check out some of the stands at the following website:

Silly Product

Across the street from the Apumanque Shopping Center is an “Ekono”
Supermarket. You can buy more Sprim and Sprim-Light there as well as
other Chilean food products.

EKONO
Av. Apoquindo #6060,
Las Condes

Here’s a silly product that you may like:

Sapito

A Sapito is a FROG shaped candy bar. It comes in three flavors; plain
chocolate, caramel chocolate and white chocolate with multicolor
sprinkles. You can buy Sapitos in any kiosk for about 10 cents each or
in supermarkets by the bag. Each one is individually wrapped. There’s
a picture of a frog on the wrapper.
(Sapito means little frog or froggy)

Unfortunately I don’t know of any vintage movie poster shops and I
wasn’t able to locate any online or offline.

There is a small video store that specializes in cult movies. They
occasionally carry some vintage posters and old Chilean comic books.

before going.

This is great, Bobbie. To save me having to pour over a map, can list
which of your choices is close/closest/least close to where I'll be
staying? (Embassy Suites/NH Hotel.)
The snail cream sounds perfect. . . I love odd health and beauty
products as gifts. And thanks for the good wishes on the trip. . I'm
going skiing in Portillo -- but will have part of a Saturday afternoon
and most of Sunday in Santiago to fool around. Did the same trip last
summer, but then we had 2 1/2 extra days, so was able to shop, take a
city tour and do Los Domenicos on Sunday (loved it).

Hi Cryptica,

Since you liked the snail cream, here’s another odd product.

Crema Lechuga = Lettuce Cream although it’s not made of lettuce.
This is a hand cream sold in a tin and it has been used here for
decades.
Here’s a picture of it.
http://www.arensburg.cl/crema.html

Crema de Lechuga is sold in any chain of “Farmacia Ahumada”
drugstores. You’ll find the snail cream there as well.

Downtown Santiago is located closest to your Hotel. The FERIA
ARTESANAL DE SANTA LUCIA and FERIA SANTIAGO are just three subway
stops away from the El Salvador subway station.
http://www.metropla.net/am/sant/santiago.htm

===========

The Apumanque Mall isn’t very far either but it’s in the opposite
direction. The Bromania Joke Kiosk and Farmacia Ahumada drugstore are
located there. Then you could go next door to PLAZA ARTESANO MANQUEHUE
craft fair. Across the street from the Mall is the Ekono Supermarket
where you could take a look at the food products.

Here’s a map:
http://www.hostcorps.com/imagehost/u/researchers/Bobbie7/Map%201%20Apumanque.gif

Note: The subway doesn’t take you directly to the mall so you could
take a bus from the corner of your Hotel. Any bus that says
“Apumanque” on it goes to the Mall.

If you go by subway you would have to get off at the last stop
“Escuela Militar” and take a taxi from there to the Apumanque Mall.
It’s about 5 minutes away. It won’t cost more than US$2.00.

The other Handicraft fair, ALDEA DE VITACURA is located about 10
minutes from the the Apumanque Mall.

I don’t know if you saw Lapizlazuli jewelry last time you were here.
Lapizlazuli is a semi-precious stone found only in Chile and some
places of Afghanistan. You can buy "Lapizlazuli" jewelry in any
handicraft fair.

Have fun skiing in Portillo!

Lettuce cream! Yep, you're on my wave length. I did see tons and
tons of the lapizlazuli jewelry last year, but found the designs
endlessly the same and not really to my taste. At Los Dominicos there
was a small shop that had lots of unusual fossils and made some very
hip contemporary jewelery out of them, so I did find something nice
there.
Thanks for the additional geographic instructions. Really helpful.
How do you like living in Santiago?

Clarification of Answer by bobbie7-ga on 30 Jul 2003 20:05 PDT
Cryptica,

I enjoy living in Santiago. The people are friendly and I like the
weather. On a day without smog the view of the mountains is marvelous.
I’ve been living in Chile for over 25 years and I can honestly say
that Santiago is a great city to live in.

By the way, the Apumanque Mall isn’t one of the nicest malls in
Santiago. It just happens to be the one with the Joke Store. I doubt
that you want to go to a Mall but if you do “Alto Las Condes” and
“Parque Arauco” are the best.

Thanks for the five "pisco sours" and tip!

Best wishes,
Bobbie7

I'm so glad to hear how much you like Santiago. I was quite taken by
it in the brief time I was there. And Portillo -- simply magical. I
might have some other questions for you, but for now, I'm going to
digest what you've done so far. Gracias!

Bobbie7--
I meant to drop you a note earlier. After all this, I never got to
buy the lettuce cream or anything else. Thanks to the big power
failure in the Northeast back on August 14th, all the airports were
closed and my flight was cancelled. They couldn't get me on another
one for 3 days and at that point, the trip became too expensive for
too few days, so I never went. I've saved your info . . .mabye next
year!

Hi Cryptica,

It’s too bad that your trip to Santiago didn’t work out this year. I
read your other question that you’ll be going to England in October.

I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Thanks for the update.
