Concerning the Earthlink ISP configured 2wire HomePortal 1000S DSL
modem/router/firewall, how may a Linux based computer initiate and use
the DSL connection without using any Earthlink software running on Windows?
The initial setup was done on the internal LAN with a Windows based
machine which was later reinstalled with Linux after the DSL was
working. I am aware of the Home Portal's browser interface.
Currently, I don't even get a ping response from the modem's Ethernet
interface via crossover cable from the Linux machine. I can use VMware
if needed to run Win98 or XP. |

Are you allowing the Linux computer to have IP information assigned to
it in DHCP mode, or do you have a static IP address assigned?
From what I've been reading, the HomePortal should be able to work in
DHCP mode, allowing the Linux computer to auto-detect the appropriate
settings.
From what I've read, the HomePortal should work with any device that
supports IP standards... whether Linux, an XBox, or a wacky
refrigerator with built-in networking.
I'm trying to determine whether you need network troubleshooting
advice, Linux configuration advice, or simply information about
settings that pertain to the HomePortal.
I want to be certain I understand the scope and expectations of your
question before I jump in.

Well, I initially tried DHCP with no luck. There is a Windows machine
in another part of this researcher's house that is using the 2wire
Home Portal thru the phone wiring in the house. I've tried using the
network settings which correspond to the Home Portal's internal LAN
for the IP, netmask, and gateway from what the Windows machine shows.
No luck there either. The Win machine shows a LAN interface and a WAN
interface. The WAN seems to be the Home Portals IP while the LAN
seems to be the local USB/ethernet/HPN adapter IP. But both seem part
of the Win XP machine's listed interfaces. So Earthlink doesn't seem
to run the Home Portal the way 2wire explains it on their site as
acting as a simple NAT router with DSL modem capabilities. I believe
Earthlink is controlling access somehow. How about I go and do some
low level troubleshooting on the interfaces and get back with a
clarification of the problem? I was hoping someone like yourself
would have enough of an answer that I would see how to go about
getting this Linux system talking thru the Home Portal. If the answer
gets timeconsuming, I would up the ante for the answer within reason.
Thanks,
Dow

Great. I have a sense of what you are looking for. And, it sounds
like you have a second machine up and running, which will make the
trouble-shooting go faster.
I'm leaning towards this being a configuration issue on the Linux
computer, but, it is complete speculation. Some questions and tests:
1. Can the Windows computer ping the HomePortal?
2. Can you bring up the HomePortal web interface from the Windows
computer and view the settings?
3. Can you ping the Windows computer from the Linux computer?
4. Is there a hub or switch anywhere in this topography?

After today, I have learned:
The Home Portal is working like 2wire docs and will reply to a DHCP
request from my SuSE 8.2 based laptop. I was able to ssh to a remote
server from my laptop thru the 2wire after the DHCP reply configured
my laptop's interface. I've eliminated hardware problems from the
lady's SuSE 8.2 PC and am at checking it's DHCP config. It is a fresh
install of SuSE 8.2 with no patches, while my laptop has been updated
from SuSE. Plus, the lady picked the software load so I may have a
small issue there. I did see that the upstairs Win XP box will talk
with the 2wire's webserver. I explored it's config and combined with
my nmap scans I have determined that the 2wire's firewall is filtering
the LAN, phone interface, and WAN interface. All ports are filtered
and it examines each packet for content. So, I've gotten enough info
to answer my question in a simple way. I'd love to have more control
over the 2wire, but the web menus are very limited in configuration.
I plan to go Saturday and work on it. I'm going to download the SuSE
8.2 patchset, burn to CD, and update the lady's box. I've run
ethernet diagnostics which show no problems. I am going to cancel the
question at this time unless you have access to the Home Portal and
would like to continue exploring. I don't want to cheat you of any
fee that you feel you have earned! Let me know if you want to
continue, however, I am pretty sure I have a handle on the 2wire now.
Thanks!
Also, your questions 1-3 are all yes. However, I can insert a hub
Saturday like I did today. I did not sniff the connection as it
didn't seem necessary at the time. Since the 2wire docs indicated
that OS-X based Macs could just use DHCP, I tried that with the laptop
and bingo, got online. On Saturday I'll focus on her software load
and checking all the ethernet configuration scripts. I was worried
the 2wire somehow knew the MAC address of the ethernet card as was
refusing to send a DHCP reply. I've switched ethernet cards and plan
to sniff the connection if the patching doesn't fix the problem.

I don't think I have earned a fee thus far. My annoying questions
come at no charge.
I did come across these documents, which I include at no charge (as I
suspect the ultimate answer to your question will resolve as a Linux
troubleshooting situation). What follows is more a collections of
clues, rather than a definitive answer.
How do I configure my computer running Red Hat Linux for DHCP?

XBox, Earthlink, and 2Wire (Note the Shasta firmware update, perhaps
helps Linux, as well?)
