Question ID: 23726
What are the concise steps to set up an Apple RAID level 0 (mirrored)
drive configuration for Workgroupserver Mac OS 7.5.3? I have an old
Powermac (7500?)with 2 Seagate HDDs (2 Gigs each) and a CDROM drive. I
have the Apple Workgroupserver 7.5.3 install CD, which has the Apple
RAID install on it also. All drives are connected to the same bus,
although there is a second available bus in the machine, that is good
as far as I know.

NOTE: Right now, both disks have been Initialized (low-level format
and zero all data), from one of the utilities on the WorkgroupServer
7.5.3 CD, and in the Disk First Aid utility on the WorkgroupServer
7.5.3 CD, under Available Disks it does show the CDROM, and both HDDs
<not mounted>, showint 2 gigs free on each disk.

I need to end up with:
1. The 7.5.3 O/S installed and running one 1 of the HDDs.
2. At least one mirrored volume mounted on the desktop (with the
half-shaded diamond disk icon). I'm not even sure about this but I
think I should set up 2 mirrored Volumes:

One Volume caleld "System" which has the O/S on it, and another Volume
called "Data" which is also mirrored. I don't completely understand
the Volume partitioning--primary partiotion and mirrored partion, can
be on either drive, etc. I just need one or 2 mirrored Volumes on the
desktop mounted, so that in case of 1 HDD failing, the other takes
over.

I need someone to explain this to be and give me the concise steps to
set it up.

Please explain it to me like I was a 2-year-old. Do not assume a lot
of computer knowledge. All I know is what I have written above. I do
not want technological alternatives that accomplish the same thing(ie
here's how it works on an HP PC, or "use a tape-drive instead" or
whatever--I want the exact steps for the RAID configuration outlined
above--there is room for individuality on Answerer's part with the
Volume partitioning--just as long as it safeguards data and uses at
least one mirrored VOlume, preferably 2-- on the system conditions I
have outlined above--only. Uou can ask for quesiton clarification, but
I don't know anything more than what I've written here already. I'm
looking for the first (soonest) decent answer. I'm not "pondering"
this, I want to actually make it work ASAP.

Sorry, I believe level 1 RAID = mirrored, not level 0 as I stated in the question.

Also part of answering this question, since both drives are
initialized, is the order in which the system software and the RAID
drivers and the RAID software should be installed. The manual says to
install the RAID drivers first, but then do I need to isntall the
system software on both HDDs or only one, for example?

<<Workgroup Servers (the hardware themselves) have model numbers. On
your CD, it should say "System Software Version 7.5.3 for the
Workgroup Server ________" and the blank in that would contain a model
number. For what model number is your CD?>>

Good question. I will post the answer as to what model number it lists
on the CD at 9:10 AM Monday morning.

The CD I have is for Workgroup Server 7250 and 8550, while the Apple
machine I have is a Power Macintosh 8500/180. Hm, could this be a
problem?

I don't think the Powermac being an 8500 matters. The OS installs and
runs no problem. It's the RAID config.

The model name might help someone find a manual, and it would help
determine which version of Apple RAID was on the CD.

So far, I've been able to find very little in the way of instructions.
I have found step-by-step instructions for installing Apple RAID 1.0.1
(the version on your CD, according to Apple, should be 1.1:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30246). The
instructions for installing RAID 1.0.1 (which you might find helpful
as a guideline) are at
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=16717

I'll see what else I can find for you.
