I am looking for estimates of

1. the size of the market for software reverse-engineering products,
like Rational Rose and TogetherJ, and similarly:

2. the market for general software IDEs . This can include U.S. market
size or world market size.

By "reverse engineering" I mean tools like generating class diagrams
from code.

There is no clear demarcation between software IDEs and Rational Rose
like UML products, which make this possibly tricky.
The results need not be exact but the source should be something
fairly credible and the sources must be something I can cite.

A great answer would try and differentiate the information by targeted
language (Java or C++) and also list market share by company. A really
great answer might give information on average amount companies, or
some companies, spend on such products, but this is not necessary.

I believe both TogetherJ and Rational were sold recently, information
on this and the amounts would be helpful.

Absolute currency of these numbers is not necessary; feel free to go
back a few years (provide changes by years if you like)

It's always tough to price these kinds of questions. I am setting a
low base price but intend to tip significantly, into 3 figures, if someone can find
sufficiently complete and compelling information; if you have a lot of
information on this feel free to ask for a repricing.

Um, also I need this information fairly soon, within a week.

Hi, rbnn:

I am not answering your question, but give your some hint how you can
get the estimates because your question itself costs more than
$50,000.00 at least.

(Jbuilder can directly convert Java code to UML class diagrams. )

Firt, you can go http://www.sec.gov to find the financil reports about
those companies. Then you can estimate the number of customers for
each company.

Second, you can look up in CAE section in the american business
encyclopedia.

Third, you can look up in Federal Internal revenue to find how much
federal tax they paid.

Thanks for the suggestions, oceandeep-ga. Regarding your comment that
an answer might cost $50,000: it's true that a sufficiently detailed
and precise one might, but I have in mind a substantially smaller
amount of work and less precise information - the sources you mention
sound like a good start. Almost any estimate of the market size of the
relevant markets would be helpful actually.
