Question ID: 237381
I would like to see the french film "Les Jeux Sont Faits" based on the
1952 book by Jean-Paul Sartre. Please note that this is not the more
recent film of the same name starring Ben Affleck. English and/or
French with/without subtitles are all ok.

The movie is about two people who die near the beginning of the film,
and are given one last chance to come back to life and correct
mistakes.

1) I would like to rent/purchase this movie. I have equipment to
play back a wide variety of formats (VHS/Beta/Laserdisk/8mm/DVD in
NTSC format, VHS in various flavors of PAL/SECAM format; the DVD
player has no region coding hardware, so I can play DVDs from any
region).

2) If this movie is going to appear on some reasonably major cable TV
network, that would also be acceptable (unless the only time it will
be aired is at 10:00 pm this evening on a local cable network that
only services a town called Eye Socket, Montana).

Thanx!

Dear Tom,

"Les Jeux Sont Faits" (English Title: The Chips are Down, a gambling
term meaning that all opportunities are open) went our in 1947 and
participated in Cannes Festival of the same year. It is, indeed, based
on a script written by Jean Paul Sartre, which was later (1952)
published as a book.

You could see the IMDB record of the film here:
http://guardian.imdb.com/Title?0039512

It had been really difficult to find copied of the film in the United
States. I've found one institution that lets rentals of the video of
the film; and indications that there are other copies available - it
was showed in University of Michigan cinema (in 1998
http://www.pub.umich.edu/daily/1998/nov/11-12-98/arts/arts4.html and
again in 2000 http://www.pub.umich.edu/daily/2000/mar/03-23-2000/arts/13.html)

Renting the Film
================
The French Video Club of Washington DC provides rentals of this film,
according to its online catelogue. You could either get it by post in
all lower 48 States of continental US, or in the "regular" way, if
you're in the DC area.

Watching it on Television
=========================
This great film is not frequently featured on American TV. The only
mentioning is on its appearance on Arte, a French-German coproduction,
that is not available in the US. However,MSN anable you to continue
and search for screenings for the next two weeks. You have to entre
your postal code and technological abilities, which is pretty lame,
but might reveal the time of creening in your area:

I hope this answered your question. I located further copies - outside
the US, such as in the Le Centre d'Information et de Documentation
(BiFI) in France <http://www.bifi.fr/doc_site/expert/video/index_film/anglais/alpha/alpha11.html>.
If you need any clarification on this answer, please let me know
before you rate it.

Search Strategy: In order to weed out the book version and other non
film related sites, I wrote the year, 1947, after I verified that this
was the year. I read "foreign" (German,French, etc.) sites, but
focused on American sites, since they'd give me answers to your
questions. See the begginning of my search at
