Hello yagle!
Looking on Canon USA's website ( http://www.usa.canon.com ), I see
that the BJ-230 bubble jet printer is compatible with Windows XP. In
fact, Windows has the driver for this printer built into its operating
system.
According to the Windows XP compatibility document written by Canon (
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCprSupport.jsp?type=xp&sname=printers§ion=10199
), Windows XP should automatically install the driver as soon as you
connect the printer, especially if your model of the BJ-230 is
USB-compatible. (Be sure you have a Printer USB cable to connect the
printer to your new computer!)
If it is Parallel, you may need to complete the following steps AFTER
connecting the printer and computer:
1) Select Printers and Faxes from the Start Menu.
2) Click Add A Printer from the Printer Tasks list.
3) Follow on-screen prompts by the Add Printer Wizard, noting that
your BJ-230 is a parallel printer.
Canon notes that the built-in (OEM) drivers have limited
functionality, and since this printer is an older model, the company
has not developed a full-featured driver for Windows XP.
If you are not comfortable using your printer without a users' guide,
you can download a PDF version from here:
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCprTechSupport.jsp?modelid=7949§ion=10216&pname=BJ-230
The above link also provides free e-mail technical support for any
problems that you may run into while using your printer.
Therefore, the necessities for setting up your printer are:
* USB MODEL:
- A USB cable (Must be for peripherals/printers)
- Printer manual (if so desired)
- Built-in Windows XP driver (included)
* Parallel MODEL:
- A printer parallel cable
- Printer manual (if so desired)
- Built-in Windows XP driver (included)
I think I've covered everything! Hope this helps with your transition
to a new computer.
