Question ID: 238289
I would like to obtain data for all forms of compact disks - music
CDs, software CDs, recordable CDs, DVDs, recordable DVDs, etc. I am
particularly interested in how many are currently being sold in the US
in each category. In addition to current sales, I am intersted in
past sales and projections for the future. Related to sales, it would
also be helpful to have data on the number of compact disks in service
today. With the new usages available, most households have at least
twice as many CDs in service today compared to five years ago.

DVD Piracy in the U.S. Becomes an Industry by Dom Serafini
“The number of illegal CDs in circulation in the world in 2001 was
estimated at 950 million, but only 20 million of these were
confiscated. It is also estimated that 130 million blank DVD-Rs were
sold worldwide in 2002.“

Historical Numbers

“This year optical media will break the mark of 10 billion units
replicated on a worldwide basis… with a healthy 9% increase over
1999's results and a 10.3 billion unit total.”

“... market production of CD and DVD amounted to 9.2 billion units
replicated in 1999, representing a 9% increase over the previous
year.“

“Last year was an extraordinary one for CD-ROM with its replication
growth increasing 18% to 3.6 billion units from 3.0 billion in 1998.”

“CD-R blank media reached 600-million units worldwide in 1998, and we
had forecast that demand would reach 1.3 billion units by the year
2000. That turned out to be very conservative, since CD-R worldwide
demand was actually 1.5 billion units in 1999 and now 4 billion is the
new target in 2002.“

“Strong growth in DVD-Video players is also expected, with an estimate
of at least 175 million households worldwide having one or more
DVD-Video players or DVD-PC drives.”

From a speech by Charles Van Horn, President, International Recording
Media Association (IRMA 2002)

“More than 3.1 billion CD-audio and CD-Rom units are forecast for
North America this year, providing nearly 1.1 billion dollars in
revenue to replicators. “

“DVD-video replication - with 630 million unit sales expected this
year in North America.”

“In 2001, some 440 million DVD-video units were reported to be
replicated.”

“The Consumer Electronics Association expects 12.7 million DVD players
to be sold this year, a 49.5 percent gain over 2001. This year, we
expect another 30 million DVD-ROM drives to be sold.”

From a speech given by Charles Van Horn at 2002 Technology &
Manufacturing Conference:

“IRMA's market intelligence service estimates that more than 3.8
billion CDs and DVDs were replicated in 2001 in North America.”

“Downloading of songs will continue to negatively impact CD-Audio
album sales.”

“CD-Audio players are in more than 80% of households-that's more than
200 million CD-Audio players.”

“Annual sales of CD-Audio players and portable players declined in
2001, but at less than 5% per year.”

“DVD-Audio players are projected to have attracted only a limited
number of early adopters and audiophiles. Broad market acceptance is
not expected to occur until after 2005.”

“Inclusion of CD-Audio players as standard equipment in North America
in at least 30% of all new automobiles over the next five years and
the large "after market" for CD-Audio kits for automobiles assures
continued growth for the CD-Audio format.”

“For 2002, CD replication in North America is expected to total 3.070
billion units, with CD-Audio registering sales of 1.610 billion units,
and CD-ROM taking the balance of sales.”

Market News Express:

“Looking at the figures, unit volume of CD Rom went from 800 million
in 2000 to 2 billion in 2002 - with sales expected to reach about 2.3
billion in 2003.”

“Citing MPD Technical World figures, 2003 is showing strong upward
sales for DVD-RW drives, with January 2003 seeing 422,786 units
shifted, and a very conservative projection of 2.1 million shipments
into the US market in 2003.”

This recent article “Does CD Still Have a Place in a DVD World” by
Ronald Hanafin (2003) addresses DVD drive forecasts.

“According to DVD Entertainment Group reports, the one-billionth DVD
was shipped to retail by mid-2002 and 40 million households would have
DVD units by the end of 2002."

"Now that high-end home PCs include recordable DVD drives, IDC
forecasts that drive sales will be strong for the next five years and
will reach 50 million units a year by 2006. Pointing to the expanding
recordable DVD production capacity and the dramatic drop in end user
prices, Peddie is confident that more than 250 million disks will be
sold annually by 2004.”

“While the growing acceptance of DVD appears to dictate the rapid
demise of CD technology, SMD’s Freeman and IDC’s Wolfgang Schlichting
are quick to point out that nearly 70 million CD-RW drives shipped
last year and the installed base is over 130 million units worldwide.
Both firms estimate that by 2005, more than 400 million drives will be
in use in personal and business computers.”

Some interesting numbers:

1983: 80,000 audio CDs sold in US
1986: 50 million audio CDs sold in US
1990: 288 million audio CDs sold in US

“1983 - only 30,000 players and 80,000 discs were sold in the United
States. But in just three years those numbers jumped to 3 million
players and 50 million discs. By 1990, sales reached 9.2 million
players and 288 million discs; 28 percent of U.S. homes had a CD
player. In less than 10 years, CDs had become a well-established
technology in North America and proved to be one of the fastest
growing industries of all time.”

According to Charles Van Horn, President of the International
Recording Media Association (IRMA 2002):

“Earlier this month it was announced that in just five years DVD
player sales passed the 43 million mark worldwide. And IRMA projects
the number of DVDs replicated in North America will surpass the
one-billion mark later this year, marking the fastest time in which a
recording media format went from introduction to one-billion units per
year.”

(..)

“The product celebrated the millennial year of 2000 with 8.5 million
players, followed by an estimated 12.6 million players in 2001, and a
projected 14.95 million sales by the end of this year.”

“DVD-video will have the largest portion of this pie, with 3.6 billion
units in 2006. The industry produced 849 million DVD-video units last
year, will break the one billion mark this year, and climb near two
billion by 2003.”

“Total worldwide optical recordable media market was 250 million units
in 1996, went up to 4.8 billion in 2001, and will drop slightly to
four and a half billion by 2006.”

(..)

“The total market in 1996 was 18 billion units, grew to 22.7 billion
by 2001, and is estimated to decline slightly to 20.5 billion by
2006.”

2003 - 1.225 billion DVD-Video units being replicated.

“Our research shows DVD-Video players will be in more than 40% of
North American homes in 2003 and close to 70% five years from now.”

2002 - “CD-Audio replication in North America is expected to end up at
1.6 billion units, virtually flat with 2001, which in turn was down 5%
from CD-Audio replication output in 2000.”

“CD-Audio players are in more than 80% of households. That's more than
200 million CD-Audio players waiting to be fed CD software.”

2000, to 35 percent in 2006 as other parts of the world increase their
demand for DVD-videos.”

“China: 275 million DVDs by 2004, surpassing Japan's expected 240
million in that same year.”

“Our 2001 report also forecasts that 440 million DVDs will be
replicated in North America; 205 million in Europe; 110 million in
Japan; and 40 million in China.”

- 8.5 million DVD-video players sold a record in the U.S. 2000.

“When you include the growing number of PCs with DVD-ROM drives and
game consoles with DVD capability, nearly 50% of all US homes will
have the DVD format by year end.”

“According to Adams Media Research, DVD is on an annual 10 million
household growth pattern. At this rate, there will be 70 million US
households by 2006.”

According Jim Taylor's DVD-FAQ, "in 2001 the ratio of installed
DVD-ROM drives to DVD-Video devices in the US was about 3.5 to 1.
Assuming a flat-line growth projection in both platforms (or
categories of platforms), by now there have probably been at least 170
million DVD-ROM drives sold, for a total base of devices capable of
reading DVD numbering around 218 million. This number was derived by
multiplying the CEA figures for DVD player sales, multiplied by 3.5.”

From an Infotech Research 2003 Press Release:

“The installed base of optical drives in home PCs in the US grew
faster than expected in the current weak economic recovery, at a rate
of over 15% in 2002, to 88.4 million units. The installed base of
CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW and combi drives in 2001 was 76.4

Installed Base – 600 million CD-ROM drives worldwide

From PCWorld:

“CD-R discs can be read by almost the entire installed base of 600
million CD-ROM drives worldwide, as well as by most current home audio

audio-CD players and older CD-ROM drives than CD-R discs are.”

“While CD-ROM drives in PCs have been replaced with CD-RW drives in
even low-end computers, there is still an installed base of nearly 600
million CD drives and 400 million CD players. This compares to an
installed base of more than 200 million DVD players, which also play
CD media.”

“Today there are more than 130 million CD burners in use and an
estimated 80 million will be added in the coming year. Strategic
