Hi there,

You'll want to begin by starting your computer in Safe Mode. To do
this, hold the F8 button down as your computer starts. If done
correctly, you should then see a menu, from here select "Safe Mode"
and then press ENTER.

Once your computer is completely started, you'll want to disable your
screen saver. As this can interrupt the defragmentation process.

Right Click on the desktop. Select "Properties". Now click the "Screen
Saver" tab and change the time to "0". Click "Ok".

You're now ready to defrag.

Click the Start Button, then select Programs, then Accessories, then
System Tools. Select the "Disk Defragmenter" program from the list.

Click "OK" to begin defragmenting.

Defragmenting can take several hours depending on the size and
defragmentation of your hard drive. You also do not want to use the
computer while it is defragmenting, as this can cause the program to
not run correctly. So it is best to defragment at a time in which you
won't need to use the computer for an hour or two.

Once it is complete, restart the computer, and you're good to go.

Glad I could help. Feel free to ask for a clarification.

Another way is to go to the task manager (control/alt/delete--only
once per application) and close ALL programs with the exception of
Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and Systray. Also, deactivate your
screensaver. Otherwise any time there is a change on the hard drive,
the defrag will have to start all over again.
