Question ID: 238608
I ran a scan on a CD and it reported that I had hidden files and did I
want to recover them and where to send them. I said to MY Computer
wich they did. Now I have hundreds of self copying REC files that
multiply faster than I can delete them. I tried McAffie Virus Scan
with 0 results, They multiply like rabbits. I can't delete them so how
can I get rid of them?

Nothing so far has worked. I have done everything suggested except the
knoppix which I was unable to download, why, I don't know. Is this the
end or are you going to suggest something else?

I tried PCCILLIN Anti Virus – scanned 24359 files 0 virus. I have two
drives D-Cd RW snd E-DVD +RW/R. In the recent past deleted CD/R
files have come back with a Copy of. A deleted file Computer would
come back as Computer and A copy of Computer. This was only
occasionally happening. Also I was having trouble with my CD burners.
I was only getting about 10MB on my CD R;s and then they would close
up. Checking Properties –used 10MB free space 0. Since I was using
both drivers I wasn’t sure which one was at fault. I decided to chk
each CD/R on the E-Drive only. Almost all came out ok. I then tried
one on the CR/R drive and indicated unusable. I ran a scan chk on the
CD and the program (Roxio) 6 indicated it had found a lot of “lost
files”. It asked if I wanted them recovered and where should they be
sent. I had them sent to MY Documents and the program finished
checking the disc. When I opened MY Documents I found a long list of
SD00123.rec files. They were inoperable each one deleted came back
with the same file plus a copy of. I finally got a Copy of Copy of
Copy of SD000023.rec. I gave up. Also I had taken both discs out of
the drives. I clicked on DVD drive and got “no disc”. Then I clicked
on CD drive and it showed 15 files on drive D with no disc in the
drive. I suspect my CD/RW drive is causing the problem and possibly
will result in a new CD/RW drive and a format of the hard drive. Any
comments?

you could try grabbing knoppix, booting into linux, and deleting all
of the files there... http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
(you just burn it to cd and boot from the cdrom)

or... hit start>run>msconfig , check the startup tab, uncheck all of
the programs that look suspicous, also check your
start>programs>startup and delete anything there, then reboot,
hopefully it wont load whatever worm/virus you have.

So do you think you have a bug or a virus?

Disable windows scripting host,
boot to DOS and delete the rec files,
turn off active desktop/view as webpage/
anything that might trigger a file to do something...

You could always reformat your PC and reinstall your O/S, after
backing up your files.
