I'm shifting servers and I have to let my affiliates know to modify their link to my Filemaker search solution at: http://63.83.186.100:591/FMPro You'll notice you get an error trying to access that page. Question is, can I use a domain name with Filemaker 4.x and Web Companion running side by side with WebStar to use something like: http://www.mailshopusa.net/FMPro You'll notice the mailshopusa.net domain jumps right to my WebStar index.html page. But using the entire link http://www.mailshopusa.net/FMPro creates a file not found error. Does Filemaker's Web Companion bar me from doing this? ... that way, all I have to do is move DNS without having my affiliates modifying their link.. Hi Mark, Your problem has nothing to do with Filemaker. Since the link http://63.83.186.100:591/FMPro is the intended link, it's form in a URL would be http://www.mailshopusa.net:591/FMPro, which doesn't give a File Not Found Error. If however, you insist that you don't want the port number to be mentioned explicitly, you will have to go for a redirect to http://www.mailshopusa.net:591/FMPro ie. create index.html in the FMPro directory and redirect it to the above address. Alternatively, you can use frames, but not all browsers support it. If you have any firther queries, please do ask. Cheers, aditya2k-ga | |

I can't speak specifically to FileMaker, but the port number :591 is likely to be the issue. If your web is hosted internally (on your own internal server) then you'll have to make a router port translation setting to direct that port number to your FMPro page. If it is hosted externally, you'll need to get your external hosting company to do the same. The domain name reference itself should not be an issue; as you said, it just needs to be changed in the DNS and you should be set on it. Another option would be to redirect the file not found error. You could, using some simple Javascript, pick up the failure to find http://www.mailshopusa.net/FMPro and redirect it to the site of your choice, including a port number if you need to. |

As per Filemaker's recommendation, it is port 591 and hosted internally. Any ideas? |

If its FP 5 server.. http://www.filemaker.com/ti/106409.html error code 4: Command is unknown So my wonder is .. what are you doing on the default page of that site (the one at the root)? Does it work internally at your end?? The port number stuff should be fine, and the bits about router-translation shouldnt be needed as we can all clearly see fmp on your box. :) hth w |
