Hi, matico-ga:

To "read" the microphone input could mean a number of things. In
general the low-amplitude signals originating at the microphone jack
of a sound card will be amplified and even digitized to some extent by
the on-board circuitry of that sound card. Software that converts
this "raw" digitization into familiar forms like .WAV, .CDA, .WMA, and
.MP3 is commonly referred to as a "codec" (coder-decoder).

Another sort of "reading" of sound input might be to try and "parse"
the sounds on-the-fly into natural language!

Before giving "the necessary steps to create a DLL," a qualified
researcher would need to know precisely what functionality is
intended.
