I have found several celebrities who publicly identify themselves with
"green" causes, and who own property in upstate New York.

===================
 CHRISTOPHER REEVE
===================

"...Reeve says by telephone from his home in upstate New York."

Movies.Go.com
http://movies.go.com/news/2000/7/liamneesoncrash071200.html

"Reeve's community and political involvement pre-dates his spinal cord
injury. Over the course of many years, he has served as a national
spokesman on behalf of the arts, campaign finance reform and the
environment. A founder and Co-President of The Creative Coalition he
helped to create recycling in New York City and to persuade state
legislature to set aside 1 billion dollars to protect the city's water
supply. Since 1976 he has been actively involved with Save the
Children, Amnesty International, National Resources Defense Council,
The Environmental Air Force and America's Watch."

 BRUCE JOEL RUBIN
==================

Bruce Joel Rubin, a dedicated practitioner of yoga, who wrote the
environmentally aware screenplay for the film "Deep Impact", has a
home in upstate New York:

"Bruce Joel Rubin is an Academy Award winning screenwriter. His film
GHOST won an Oscar for best original screenplay in 1990. His other
films have included JACOB'S LADDER, MY LIFE, DEEP IMPACT, BRAINSTORM,
and the upcoming STUART LITTLE 2, SLOWMAN, and MIMZY.

Bruce resides in Los Angeles with his wife Blanche and three dogs and
also has a home in upstate New York (near Rhinebeck) where he spends
half the year."

"Rubin still cares deeply about the NEO [Near Earth Objects] cause and
is emphatic that the appearance of 'Deep Impact' provides an ideal
opportunity to garner support for NEO search programs worldwide. He
is happy to have these thoughts made known."

 NATALIE MERCHANT
==================

"Ms. Merchant has little to lose. 'I'm in a privileged position,' she
said by telephone from Hawaii, where she lives part of the year; she
also has a home in upstate New York."

On Lisa Rein's Radar
http://www.onlisareinsradar.com/archives/001056.php

"Natalie Merchant was previously known as the singer and songwriter of
the "10000 Maniacs". They made a big impression for their 'unplugged'
prestation on MTV, and the record of this show has been their last
before Natalie Merchant went her way.

On this way, she also left social claims to adopt more personal themes
for her songs, saying that she's more inpired as a songwriter to talk
about people's feelings... in her life it seems that she's really
involved in fights for environment, social stuff."

Soulcatcher: Music
http://membres.lycos.fr/hiyami/songs/natalie.htm

"The upstate origins influenced more than just the band's look. Coming
from a depressed ex-factory town, Merchant and the band noticed with
pain the destruction of people and environment that our
post-industrial economy was causing. Her songs had always been
socially conscious ('My Mother the War' was a war protest song), but
often in the mid to late-eighties they began to take on a very direct
subject matter. Exploitation of human and natural resources was a
common theme in these years, as evidenced by the song 'A Campfire
Song,' from their 1987 release In My Tribe."

 MARY TYLER MOORE
==================

"Mary Tyler Moore is the International Chairman of the Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation and has been elected to the board of the American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She and her husband
make their home in Manhattan and in upstate New York, where they keep
dogs, horses, and goats."

TVLand
http://www.tvland.com/shows/dvd/actor4.jhtml

"Mary Tyler Moore... She is a vegetarian and a strong animal rights
activist."

Alto Celebs
http://www.altocelebs.com/m/mary-tyler-moore/

"Television and movie superstar Mary Tyler Moore led a rally on the
steps of the State House yesterday, demanding humane treatment of farm
animals... Hundreds of animal activists joined Moore at the morning
rally, sponsored by the national animal advocacy organization, Farm
Sanctuary, which was founded by Gene Bauston... 'It's bad for people.
It's bad for the animals. It's bad for the environment. Halt factory
farming,' the crowd chanted."

 PETE SEEGER
=============

"In the sixties, while enjoying a goodly amount of success due to the
folk revival, Seeger continued to travel, playing the campus circuit
and benefits for civil rights, peace and labour movements. He was also
in the forefront of the anti-Vietnam outcry, joining forces with young
folksingers like Joan Baez to oppose US involvement in the conflict.
This helped boost his popularity with the youth of America. During
this time, he also turned his energies towards the environment, namely
towards cleaning up the Hudson River which ran past his home. The
river had become severely polluted due to the dumping of industrial
wastes such as mercury and benzene. In 1969, he formed the Clearwater
Organization, a group dedicated to environmental awareness... Pete has
been married to his wife, Toshi, for fifty years. They live in a cabin
in upstate New York."

Here are some additional names of well-known persons who have homes in
upstate New York, but whose "greenness" I wasn't able to determine:

==============
 SHANIA TWAIN
==============

"It was through this first recording that Shania met her
producer/husband, Robert John (Mutt) Lange. The two made beautiful
music together on her phenomenally successful The Woman in Me (1995)
and Come On Over (1997) albums. They now live in a 12,000 square feet
home/studio in upstate New York that sits on 1,200 hectares of land."

 JOAN OSBORNE
==============

"Joan Osborne's breakthrough album, 'Relish,' sold millions and was
nominated for Grammy awards. Its huge single, 'One of Us,' was all
over the airwaves and TV; Prince was sufficiently blown away that he
even recorded his own version of it. Bob Dylan asked her to sing a
duet with him. Osborne toured the world, sang to millions, and came
home a star... 'You know, I love music, but the music business is
going to grind me into dust,' Osborne said in an interview from her
home in upstate New York."

 SALLY JESSY RAPHAËL
=====================

"Raphaël is a self-proclaimed Francophile, with an 800-bottle
collection of mostly French selections, split between her Manhattan
brownstone and her home in upstate New York."

 LIAM NEESON
=============

"But 2001 has been an eventful year for Liam Neeson, no matter how you
slice it. A brutal accident on his upstate New York spread — which he
shares with wife Natasha Richardson and their children — almost put
him out completely. He wound up fracturing his pelvis and walking on
crutches, barely making his start date for Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of
New York shoot in Italy last summer."

==================
 JAMES EARL JONES
==================

"With the respect James Earl Jones commands, it's little wonder his
latest role is that of judge -- in this case one who gets to sit in
the Supreme Court.

Jones flew into town Tuesday night from his home in upstate New York
for a one-day shoot for his cameo role in the movie Undercover Angel,
which yesterday was filming in the Supreme Court building."
