Question possibly best handled by UK researcher due telephone use.
An associate is considering buying a vehicle & returning to driving
after a break - 36 Months ban followed by the remaining time 'priced
off the road'. Her driving record is unblemished except for one
'driving with excess alcohol' conviction, during her college days 4
years ago. As a result of this (now spent) conviction, she is finding
it next to impossible to obtain vehicle insurance. This is the way of
the world, and maybe rightly so. She considers herself to have learnt
the lesson, and I sincerely beleive changes in her character and
circle of friends over the last few years would make a repeat
performance most unlikely.
I have tried asking my own insurers (churchill) to add her to my own
policy as a 'named driver', however they were unable to accept her due
to the conviction referred to above. They simply don't deal with that
scenario.
So it would seem she must find her own policy (third party, fire &
theft would be adequate).
Could a researcher, given the required (de-personalised) details
below, find a selection of vehicle insurance companies, operating
within the UK, which will accept drivers with this type of driving
history, and ring round for a selection of quotes? The lower the cost
of any policies suggested the better, but
accepted - situation like this often attract high prices.
Details:
Driver - Female, aged 30yrs 2mths
Occupation - student
accidents in last 5 years - none
medical problems - none
insurance cancelled or refused in last 5 years - no
full uk resident since birth
held licence since 18 yrs of age
no endorsements ('points') for speeding, etc on licence
convictions within last 5 yrs:
autumn 1999:
code IN10 - driving without insurance
code DR10 - over limit of alcohol for driving
(the above 2 resulted in a fine of £600 and a 36-month driving ban.)
Vehicle to be insured:
Any small, low-engine sized, low insurance bracket car. A 1.0 litre
ford fiesta say.
When ringing round, you'll probably have to use the phrase 'just out
of interest' quite a bit, and invent some details I guess, in order to
get a ballpark figure quote.
Keep a note of the time you spend on the 'phone, I will reimburse the
cost of this via the tip feature.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my question, I'll be at my
computer for the next half hour or so in case any researcher would
like to jump in with an RFC. Time now by my clock is 0000GMT |

Hi Jem, in the time since I posted the question I did a little
research myself.. Churchill suggested their likely cost would be a
minimum of around £2500; this was not based on any particular make and
model, just 'some cheap and cheerful vehicle' was how it was put as I
remember!
The lady herself managed to get a personal quote of around £700
third-party only, this I believe was via 'Swinton' insurance brokers
in the Liverpool area.
I think that's quite a reasonable figure given the endorsements on her
licence, & I'm worrying that you might spend time trying to beat such
a quote - but the question is still up & the results of your own
research would still be interesting, if you did want to tackle it. Let
me know about any call charges you incur.

Hi gan-ga :)
I have so far managed to contact 10 separate insurers. Without
exception, they all require me to give my full personal contact
details in order to provide me with a quote (and understandably, I am
unable to give them my personal details). What I have managed to
ascertain from all of them during the course of my telephone calls is
that they ARE willing to provide an insurance quote (and cover) for
someone with motoring convictions such as the ones your friend has on
her licence.
In cases where the insurers' online quotation system cannot be
utilised (e.g. because of the motor convictions, in some of the cases,
I would get about half-way through the online quote form before it
notified me that I had to telephone directly in order to continue with
the quotation) they are still willing to provide a quote, it just has
to be done via the telephone.
Would this clarification, along with the telephone and internet
address listings of the 10 companies contacted be suitable as an
answer for you?
