techtor-ga,
What I'm looking for is the top-most designation or name that the
marines who fought on Guadalcanal belonged to, other than "Navy" or
"Marine Corp." As you can see, I'm not familiar with the naming
strategics of the military.
My ultimate goal is to find the name of a book written about the
Pacific Island battles that these divisions were part of. I seem to
remember that the name of the book had something to do with the name
of the divisions, like 3rd Army, 101st Airborne, etc.

Thanks for clarifying that. If the book is all you need, I'll look for
it online and post the title here. Perhaps I can find a list of books,
then I'll post them to see if what you need is among them.

From what I know, the Marines is just a Corps-size part of the Navy
(but the Marines is organized in a way similar to the army). Corps is
the next size of a unit below Army. After Corps comes the Division,
then Brigade (sometimes this is not included), then Battalion, then
Regiment, then Company, then Platoon, and then Squads. This is the
usual way of organizing, but it can differ from case to case.
Military organization - of current Marine forces only, but I give here
as an example of organization

Hope this helps. Do let me know if you need more information.
