I hired a lawyer who filed a personal injury case for me and is now walking away two weeks before my experts witnesses/doctors are due. I need to find a plaintiff attorney (I live in Cleveland, OH) with experience representing someone injured from carbon monoxide - on a contingency basis ASAP. (Do not refer carbonmonoxidelawyer.com) How do I find an attorney in such a short period of time and not have the case thrown out. I have had two attorney's before this one - one had a conflict and one had a heart attack, literally and had to withdraw. If I do not find a attorney right away - the judge will likely toss my case. I am permanantly disabled with brain and heart injuries and the condominoum I lived in is uninhabitable - baecause the condo association refuses to fix the CO problems. The CO comes into my unit from 3 sources outside my unit- all of which I can not fix. Thus, I need to a personal injury attorney in record time (a week or less) my experts are due on Aug 29th. And I have unihabtable property I own and I can not afford to pay the mortgage and condo fees forever. If I stop it will forclose and someone will move in not knowing they can be injured or killed by the CO problem. I am available to provide more detail if required. |

Dear elisabeth2222, There is no question but that Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease has some very good attorneys, and in fact I have utilized some of them in continuing legal education programs I developed, but they are primarily a defense firm. When calling firms, given the lower likelihood that a defense-oriented firm would take a case such as this, I would put them toward the end of my contact list. Goren, Goren & Harris has a good reputation, and I have also utilized Steve Goren in CLE programs I developed. It is primarily a Michigan firm. You may be able to find additional firms through the ATLA directory. There's an obnoxious "terms of use" page to get into the directory, but most good plaintiff's lawyers are members. http://www.atlanet.org/cgi-bin/pubdir.pl |

You may also wish to try the Martindale-Hubbell Directory. The online version is at www.martindale.com . However the print version (available at most libraries) may be a better resource. The print version provides "A, B and C" ratings for individual attorneys, based on the opinions of their legal peers. I did not find any ratings in the online directory. |

The lawyers.com site mentioned in the original answer is an interface to the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. * http://www.martindale.com/ * http://www.lawyers.com/ An alternative directory of lawyers is operated by West Group, through its FindLaw service, and can be found at: http://lawyers.findlaw.com/ |

I personally would not rely on a service like injuryboard to find an attorney, as it is run by a law firm marketing service, charges fees for firm participation, doesn't promise to have a participating firm in any given state, and as far as I can see doesn't offer a list of participating firms. If you want a lawyer referral, you are almost always much better off seeking one through a national, state, or local bar association than through a commercial service. The American Bar Association maintains a list of attorney referral services, organized by state. * http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/lris/directory.html * http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/lris/directory/states/ohio.html |

It is not absolutely required that you find an attorneyhwo has previously handled a CO case. If you find a really good attorney who has handled lots of cases with good results, you should seriously consider hiring that attorney. If an attorney is very good, he or she can get involved in most types of personal injury cases for the first time. I suspect that most really good plaintiff attorneys who have lots of experience could handle a CO case. Trial Lawyers for Public Justice has connectiuons with lots of good lawyers. If you combine their recommendations with other recommendations that you respect, you should at least interview those attorneys and tell them your concerns. Good luck. |
