Question ID: 240597
I would like to play internet radio over my home stereo. I have an
older Sony unit with no input jacks but I'm thinking I can just use
the speakers with appropriate amp and not even have the stereo on. ? I
have DSL. I'd like to know if the following is possible, or what
alternatives there are -

I have an extra laptop (Win 98, Pentium II, IBM 600E) that could be
located near
the stereo. How would I hook it up to DSL? I have Verizon and a DSL
modem at my desktop computer. There is a phonejack near the stereo.
Can I just get another DSL modem, run the ethernet cable to the
laptop, then the audio cable to the amp and then to the speakers (then
load the Verizon software and log in?)? Can I be logged in on
two computers at the same time? I'd perfer this to having a router off
my desktop, but if that is the only option I could run the wire in the
basement. I need to keep the desktop speakers hooked up so I can use
in my home office while still having the music on the stereo. If I was
to change stereo to a newer receiver & CD player would this make it
easier? I would expect the receiver would have extra input jacks.

What kind of budget do you have for this project? I'd suggest setting
up a wireless network, but I didn't know if that would be too
expensive of a solution. By the way, you can have only one DSL modem
operating on the phone line at a time, so the option of a second modem
is out.

I'd ratther not do wireless, I can easily run cables. If I have a
router on my office computer and run to the living room what do I need
to do at that location. Do I then need another computer there? Is
there such a thing as am internet radio? Budget? I'm open to looking
at different options. I guess $250 would be the most I would want to
go.

There are a few internet music systems by Philips which 'might' fall
within the $250 bracket that can stream music play MP3s

If the computer you'll connect to the stereo system has sound output
(like from a sound card), you could start from there. I assume both
your laptop and your desktop have sound cards. If you want to connect
your desktop computer to the living room sound, that could be done,
but it could take a lot of cable.

Connect an FM transmitter to your USB port.
Use your sony receiver to tune into it.

Search ebay for "fm transmitter"
or "usb fm transmitter" to find
an appropriate model.
