How many companies are there in each of these English counties:
Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. Ideally we
would prefer this broken down by size of company(probably number of
employees).

Hi there,

This is the exact information you are after, but it is at ward level,
not county.

VAT registered enterprises by employment sizeband, March 2000
http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/data_downloads.asp?dsid=I5

This file has it by county and turnover, but not by number of
employees, & by number of employees by industry, not county:

Size Analysis of United Kingdom Businesses Data for 2002
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_commerce/PA1003_2002/PA1003_2002_FINAL.pdf

I've got a big headache now, and I leave it for someone else to
complete - the navigation of this site is a mess:

Hi jasonc

I would just like to add to robertskelton-ga information:

There are around 38,871 companies operating in and around Merseyside.

Merseyside has 451,800 people employed
You can view a detailed graph which breaks these figures into sectors
of employment. "transport, construction, hotels and restaurants" etc.
[Please scroll down to page 4 of the .pdf file]

Although it is not quite what you are looking for I hope it is
helpful.

Hi Jasonc,

The raw data required to answer your question was available as an
Excel file at the site below as pointed out by robertskelton-ga.

VAT registered enterprises by employment sizeband, March 2000
http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/data_downloads.asp?dsid=I5

Having manipulated this data in Excel using the sum() function, my
local knowledge and an atlas, I have calculated the information for
each county based on the data for each of its wards.

The number of VAT registered companies in each county, categorised by
size are as follows:

CHESHIRE
1-49 Employees 25885
50-249 Employees 400
250+ Employees 100

GREATER MANCHESTER
1-49 Employees 55020
50-249 Employees 1065
250+ Employees 220

LANCASHIRE
1-49 Employees 33530
50-249 Employees 460
250+ Employees 80

MERSEYSIDE
1-49 Employees 22290
50-249 Employees 365
250+ Employees 75

I hope these figures cover the information required to fully answer
your question. If you would like any further clarification please do
not hesitate to ask. Justification of these figures is available in
the form of the Excel file which I modified during my calculations. I
will email this to you if you would like to check the data.

The comment by robertskelton provides the answer to your question. All
you need to know is which local authority (city) is in which country.
As the file is in Excel format it is easy to work with.

there is a company at www.betamodel.com who provide a more current
version of the information you require based on other sources of data.
You should be aware that not all businesses register for VAT - there
is a threshold of £58000. In addition, group companies only have 1 VAT
registration. So you will not get the count or employment figure for
NW branches of VAT companies that HQd in other regions QED.
