I am researching for any existing plans/drawings that were made for
the ornamental ponds in Brockwell Park, south London, in 1985/6. They
were designed and carried out by Lt. J.J. Sexby.

Do you mean 1985/6 plans for modifying Sexby's designs of 1892, or
Sexby's original designs ?

hi,
I am searching for the original plans for the brockwell park ponds
that were designed by Sexby in 1895/6. He also designed stuff for
other parks and even wrote a book but I haven't found any
drawings/designs/plans that he used to either obtain his funding from
the LCC or that were drawn up by any architect he might have worked
with. These plans should show the drainage proposed or built and how
they proposed the water flow of the ponds would be maintained. There
was a ceremonial pamphlet marking the opening of the ponds to the
public which leads me to beleive some plans must have existed. I
don't think he could have designed the ponds in 1892 as the LCC only
purchased the additional land in 1895 as the following quote shows
"Possession of the land was obtained in July 1895 and the work of
laying out was proceeded with as soon as possible afterwards. The
negotiations throughout have been of a lengthy character, chiefly
owing to the difficulty of coming to terms with the lessee, and no
doubt appeared to those who were without the knowledge of the
questions involved to be unnecessarily so. As a consequence, many
letters and petitions were received from the residents in Arlingford
road and those more immediately concerned urging the council to
expedite the formation of this entrance which had been practically
promised so long. The council however were alive to the necessity for
this fromt he very first and required no promptings to induce them to
carry out so desirable an improvement. The ground which had thus been
acquired consists of a narrow strip of meadow land, running nearly
north and south, bounded on the west side by the gardens of the houses
of tulse hill and the east side by the brockwell house estate. Along
the westen boundary.....and near the soutnern end were two ponds
connect by a stream which conveys the water from the vall intersecting
brockwell park to the sewer at the arlingofrd road end of the ground."

So the grounds on which the ponds were formed weren't purchased until
1895.

Let me know if a copy of the ceremonial pamphlet would be useful and I
can try and scan it in and send it by e-mail.

The reference to 1892 was from a letter by Jeff Rumble to the
Brockwell Park Friends' Newsletter in 2001, to be found online at:

http://www.brockwellpark.com/Newsletters/fobpfeb2001.pdf

Unfortunately that seems to be the only online reference, and I'm not
going to get very far searching for original documents from my base in
Sydney, Australia !

Thanks for the more detailed explanation of what you are after - maybe
a more local researcher can help you further.

Good luck.

thanks sidney australia! I hope google has some english researchers
out there somewhere. I do know that various research libraries like
the London Metropolitan archives have stuff and also the Minnit
library at Brixton and perhaps the National Monuments record but I
haven't got the time/knowhow to access it.
