how do you extract an inserted object from a word document into its
original format? I have a a word document with a large file
inserted(10 megs approx), it displays correctly as a graphic, I think
it may be a cad file (dgn, dxf, dwg) or it may be a very large bitmap or
jpeg. But I need the original file. Please help. Many Thanks |

Hello Caffers,
The "right answer" will likely depend on the type of file and software
you have installed on your system. Let me outline an solution that
*may* work (thus not yet an answer) and see if it meets your needs.
[1] Right click [and hold] on the object. You should get a menu with
options like Edit or Open. Choose Edit. If you don't get such an
option, please indicate the choices available.
[2] At this point, the application that created the object should
launch and display the inserted file. If this does not occur, please
let me know the specific error messages that occur.
[3] Go to the file menu and select the option named "Save Copy As" or
similar choice. Save the file. At this point you have the file you
need. If you don't get such a choice, please indicate the menu items
you do get, especially if you can copy / paste the contents. That may
suggest a better solution.
[4] Close & return to Word.
As mentioned before - if you have any problems - please indicate the
errors. If it works, let me know so I can prepare a proper answer.

Unknown object-> convert
Show picture tool bar
Borders and Shading
Caption
Format objecct
If I right click hold and release I get
copy here

create hyperlink
cancel
I tried to follow your instructions but no programs open or anything,
I have attempted to many copy paste procedures and in different ways
but I have had no luck.
I hope this helps

Hello Caffers,
Hmm. Getting a menu choice starting with "Unknown Object" is a pretty
good clue. It basically indicates that Microsoft Word cannot determine
the type of object (e.g., Excel spreadsheet).
You did not say if the inserted object is displayed / printed
properly. If so, you may be able to get some information using copy /
paste into another application. This will likely be a picture of the
information (and not the original data).
If you choose "Unknown Object -> Convert", do you get any helpful
choices? I would expect not, but we could be surprised.
Another suggestion I will make is to ask the author of the document
- to ask for the data in another form
- to ask what software they use (and how)
Depending on the answers, you could get something you can use out of
this document.

trying to convert the unknown object gets me know where, word doesnt
give any options to convert it to,
I dont think it is a picture (jpeg, bmp) as the image is so big and I
am unable to paste it to image editing software.
I am unable to paste the image to any other program.
Ask the for the original file from the author seems to be the only way
to go!
Many thanks

Hello Caffers,
I was afraid the results would be as you described. I will leave it to
your discretion on how you want to handle the question.
- close it (so you don't have to pay)
- put another clarification (so I can make a proper answer and be
paid)
