Hello whitney,

Thank you for your question.

What you might be looking for is a PCMCIA OR Cardbus (depending on
your laptop) Video Capture Card. Interesting, my searching brought up
quite a few references to these, but most were dramatically outdated.
Perhaps this accessory has lost favor in the last few years with USB
Web Cams and the like. You might have to check Ebay for used cards.

I shall provide a few links that seem to be current, however many of
these will not be available from your local CompUSA or Best Buy. Most
can be sourced from the web pages linked below or by contacting the
manufacturer to find a local dealer. That being said, let's look at a
few:

is usb the same thing as firewire?

Clarification of Answer by clouseau-ga on 07 Aug 2003 18:19 PDT
No, its not Whitney. Similar looking connectors and similar in
concept, but Firewire is a much faster transfer rate.

Since your computer has Firewire, I would be absolutely amazed if it
did not have USB as well. And there are two flavors of USB, the
original 1.0 and now 2.o which is significantly faster than 1.0.

With analog video as your feed, I do not think there is any
significant limitation in using USB as opposed to Firewire devices for
your purposes.

Even with Analog video, you will note a difference in between USB and
Firewire. If your Laptop has USB 1.0 then I would NOT recommend using
the USB...the firewire will be better, as it will be fast enough.
With USB 2.0, then you could use either one.

Unless you really want to get into doing your video captures all the
time and want to spend a lot of money on equipment, it would be easier
for you to get it done by a company that specializes in video capture
and editing. They also offer editing and authoring services and can
transfer your video to DVD.

There is a network of companies that can do this for you. Try these
groups:

http://www.takeonenetwork.com
http://www.alphavideoservices.com

If you decide to do the capture on your own, definintely use firewire
(at least 400 with 800 being preferred). USB doesn't have the speed
to to keep up with the video stream especially with digital video.

Cheers!
