My friend Michelle am a travel writer and she has written a series of 20 travel guides to the main cities of Europe (see www.takeoff48hours.com). She is trying to increase her reach by getting her guides published electronically. What companies publish travel guides electronically? The only one I know is travelunbound.com -- are there any others? Please rank by how large they are and whether they do guides to Europe. |

Hi victorchua, and thanks for your question: Fodors prides itself on being one of the worlds largest travel guides. YES, they have European guides. YES, they are interested in receiving new reviews to places. "Researcher Writer Positions If you're interested in working for Fodor's as a travel writer, send your résumé and writing clips, together with a cover letter explaining your qualifications and areas of expertise, to: " "So you've written a travel guide Please send book proposals (and an accompanying résumé) to Karen Cure, Fodor's Travel Publications' Editorial Director, at 280 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017." http://www.fodors.com/about/us/ftp_contact_work.cfm Lonely Planet claims: "We are one of the world's leading independent publishers" YES, they have European guides. YES, they are interested in receiving new reviews to places "We look for people from a variety of backgrounds who have professional skills and experience in travel writing and research. Impress us with your specialised knowledge of a country or region, or your interest and skills in areas such as food, languages, outdoor activities (cycling, diving, walking, wildlife etc), photography and other travel-related pursuits." http://www.lonelyplanet.com/faq/guide.htm One Small Planet: Offers an "How to Self-Publish Your Travel Guide" and "we can help you get your work into print and help you market it once it has been published" http://www.onesmallplanet.com/geninfo.htm City Search provides online guides to cities around the world but NOT Europe at the moment (maybe you could suggest your guides to them) http://www.citysearch.com/ Misc Links which might be of interest to you: "Writing a Travel Guidebook" http://www.fabjob.com/travelwritersample.html Google Search "to be a travel writer" ://www.google.com/search?as_q=&num=10&hl=pt&btnG=Pesquisa+Google&as_epq=to+be+a+travel+writer&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch= Google lists most of the largest (and the smallest!) of the travel guides in their directory which you can view here: http://directory.google.com/Top/Recreation/Travel/ I hope this helps you get published. A reasonable answer, well worth the $4. Very quick too (a few hours). How does Google Answers work from the researcher perspective? If I offered $10, would you have spent more time researching the answer? |

Hello again victorchua, Thanks for your rating and your comments. Basically, yes I would have spent longer researching the question for you, but I have to say that:- A.) I don´t think there are that many resources left that I didn´t mention. B.) I spent much longer than I had planned in researching your answer. I should mention too, that the website you mentioned (www.takeoff48hours.com) was a nice design, but does not seem to be listed in the Google directory. I did a check to see who was linking to your site, and not that many other websites link to yours (important for rankings) I suggest you look here: ://www.google.com/addurl.html and request for it to be listed, also see this webpage to see who is linking to your site: ://www.google.com/help/features.html and for general webmaster "Do´s and Dont´s" go here ://www.google.com/webmasters/ My thinking is that if you can increase quality hits to your site, you will increase your "reach" without having to share your work with the "big boys" (unless it´s recognition as a writer you want and not the money!) All the best and good luck! THX1138 |
