Question ID: 241525
Hi, I need to know how many PGA tournaments were sponsored nationally
by charities in 2000, 2001, 2002, and (if possible) thus far in 2003.
For the same years, how many municipalities sponsored PGA tournaments
for fund raising purposes?

Hello -

Couple of issues:

1) Strictly speaking, there are no tournaments or championships
sponsored by charities. Charities can be *benefaciaries* of these
events, but not benefactors. Did you mean to ask, "how many charities
are beneficiaries of PGA tournaments?"

2) Can you expound upon your definition of municipalities?

Thank you,

jbf777-ga

Ok, how many charities were beneficiaries of PGA tournament proceeds
in 2000, 2001, 2002, and if possible, thus far in 2003?

Municipalities means local governments, i.e. townships, cities,
counties, etc.

Thanks,
Betsy

Would you be able to diclose who or what this is for? The PGA is a
bit reticent about divulging information to unknown recipients.

Ok, how many charities were "beneficiaries" of PGA tournament proceeds

And, "municipalities" means local governmental bodies: cities,
counties, townships, etc.

Thanks.

Hello -

Are you aware that you posted the same thing twice?

Clarification of Question by betsyj-ga on 08 Aug 2003 17:17 PDT
I'm the PR person for a county board, and I need the statistics for a
presentation. That's all I can say right now. If the PGA continues
to be reticient about providing such general information as I've
requested, then it could well be their loss!

Thanks.

Here's the status. PGA will not release this information formally.
However, on their web site they have 2002 and 2003 information for
every tour. The major charity benficiaries are included. There are
dozens of tours and charities that would have to be manually counted
between 2002 and 2003.

I wouldn't be able to do that for $25; however, if you'd like to
increase your price, we can talk about that.

Thanks,

jbf777-ga

For $100, would you compile a list of charities and municipalities
that were beneficiaries of PGA tournaments for 2002 and 2003 (and give
me an asterisk for any tournaments that you can easily discern
occurred in Illinois)?

Municipalities are not available, but for the charities, yes, I'd be
willing to do that.

"close" the question or do I?

You can keep the same question, just increase the list price to $100.

Also, do you want the "sub-beneficiaries" of these beneficiaries if
they're listed? For instance, for the Hawaii Open, Friends of Hawaii
was the main beneficiary who in turn helped:

Hi, sorry. When I tried to respond I got a message saying I couldn't
modify or comment on the question because it was currently being
answered. But I didn't know that I could provide question
clarification.

So anyway the answer is yes, please list sub-beneficiaries. Mark
Illinois (sub)beneficiaries to the degree you can discern them. Break
down by 2002/2003, and give me totals for each year, please.

And tell me specifically how to change the price to $100.

Thanks.

clarification.

   No problem.

Break down by 2002/2003, and give me totals for each year, please.

Unfortunately, totals will not yet be available for 2003. Only
2002.

And tell me specifically how to change the price to $100.

There is an "Edit Question Parameters" button. Click that, and
there's a place to edit the list price.

Clarification of Question by betsyj-ga on 14 Aug 2003 09:38 PDT
Ok, I'll edit list price now.

I need a total for thus far in 2003 (or let's say, first half of the
year. Through June.) Sorry if that means you have to count manually.

Why do you think they won't release data on municipalitiy sponsorship?

Request for Question Clarification by jbf777-ga on 14 Aug 2003 09:49 PDT
I have no idea. It may be they're not giving any money to municipalities.

Betsy -

I just got off the phone with the PGA Tour. We have a bit of an issue
that has come up.

The PGA Tour is the umbrella association over 3 separate
organizations: PGA Tour, PGA Championships, and PGA Nationwide. I
unfortunately just learned of this today. That means, in a nutshell,
the work has been tripled for a full snapshot, because there's now
2002 and 2003 information for all three sub-organizations.
Fortunately, they are all neatly separated into 3 categories, which
means 1, 2, or 3 of them may be independently tackled. I'm working on
the PGA Tour information right now.

Because of your time constraints, I suggest posting 2 separate
questions and have 2 other researchers working concurrently on this.

Please let me know what you'd like to do. Should you choose to post 2
other questions, I will post directions for the other researchers to
get them going quickly on this. I apologize for the inconvenience.

It occurred to me that you might be affected by the power outages in
Illinois.
It also occurred to me that you were planning on having the entire PGA
information for $100. We can renegotiate this if you want, since
you'd only be getting 1/3 of it from this particular question.

Clarification of Question by betsyj-ga on 15 Aug 2003 18:49 PDT
Hi JBF,
Sorry for the delay. I had to check with somebody before I could
answer and he naturally wasn't available until late today. Same guy
who JUST HAD to have this for today couldn't make himself available
to talk to me until after 5pm.

Stick with PGA Tour; forget the other two (for now).

Thanks for staying on top of this.

Hi,
Still there? I'm concerned about why my latest answers to your latest
questions aren't appearing in the dialog on my screen. Did you get my
response to what I think was your last question: Just compile PGA
Tour info for now, and that I did change the price to $100? Any
chance I'll have this tomorrow?

Betsy,

Please note: I don't consider this answer finished until you're
satisfied with it. If you choose to rate this answer, please do so
after asking for any necessary clarification or additional
information. Thanks for your understanding.

For each year, the following is the majority of charities donated to
by these tournaments. There may be more not listed on the website.
There's much overlap between these two years, as the charities
selected for 2002 haven't changed all that much in 2003. Also, the
"sub-benficiaries" listed may only be a partial list.

Charity Dollars
================
2002 total for Tour: $47.4M
2002 total for Nationwide: $3.4M
2002 total for Champions: $21.6M
------------------
2002 total: $72.4M

For 2003 PGA Tour donations, $800,000 is *reported* thus far on the
website [which is possibly a much different number than what has
already been collected], with more numbers expected to roll in in the
coming months. The PGA has not officially released any numbers for
2003 other than the $800,000 total that I was able to find from one
particular tournament.

2003 tournaments and charities for the PGA Tour, as listed on the
PGAtour.com website.

JBF,
Looks good. Only thing is that although the dollar information is
interesting and we'll use it, the specific piece of information I was
looking for is a raw number: the number of charities that were
beneficiaries of PGA tournaments in 2002 and so far in 2003. Start
counting, and fast, as I now need this asap!

Thanks,
Betsy

How do you want duplicates handled? There are many of these
tournaments that are giving to the same charity. Do you want them
disregarded?

Clarification of Answer by jbf777-ga on 18 Aug 2003 08:39 PDT
I'm working as fast as I can. I have to load the entire thing into
excel, clean it up, and sort it, delete duplicates, etc.

Clarification of Answer by jbf777-ga on 18 Aug 2003 09:09 PDT
At least 813 for 2003 [of course, that's just what's reported... there
could be a lot more charities donated to].

Request for Answer Clarification by betsyj-ga on 18 Aug 2003 10:09 PDT
Focus on the charities, not on the PGA. How many CHARITIES are
supported by PGA tournaments. Count each sub-beneficiary but don't
count the same one twice if you can avoid it.

Aim for 95 percent confidence interval. We don't need perfection
here.

Thanks. It's a lousy job, which is why I delegated it to you!

Betsy

Clarification of Answer by jbf777-ga on 18 Aug 2003 11:09 PDT
There's at least 1080 for 2002 [same thing applies for this year].

Request for Answer Clarification by betsyj-ga on 19 Aug 2003 08:19 PDT
JBF,
Is that your final answer? At least 1080 nonprofit organizations were
(sub)beneficiaries of the PGA Tour in 2002, and 813 were in 2003?

Thanks,
Betsy

Clarification of Answer by jbf777-ga on 19 Aug 2003 08:32 PDT
Betsy,

Yep, those are the final numbers.

Some additional information:

PGA Nationwide represents under 5% of the total dollars given by all 3
organizations. Thought this might impact your decision as to whether
or not to include a separate question for it.

Also, I'm going to post this here as a reference in the event that you
open the other question(s):

Charity Dollars
================
2002 total for Tour: $47.4M
2002 total for Nationwide: $3.4M
2002 total for Champions: $21.6M

2002 total: $72.4M
